Civitanova Bike Festival

It was born four years ago with the aim of combining the promotion of the area with a naturalistic, educational tourism and obviously linked to the culture of cycling.

An event made up of conferences, meetings, debates, workshops, excursions and rides around the city, which aim to collect in one place all the experiences related to the world of biking, and to bring them into a narrative path on cycle tourism that can offer insights of reflection and solutions capable of combating climate change and creating awareness in people.

A festival that, with the coordination of institutions and trade associations, aims to enhance the territorial contexts, create debate and comparison between the leading exponents of the sector and improve the whole micro and macro economy that revolves around tourism on two wheels .

… Without forgetting the conviviality, the fun and the shows!

In fact, in these three days of festival there will be events, gymnastics and activities for children, play areas for everyone, aperibike, freestyle shows and the magical Gipsy photo point by photographer Monica Palloni, with her Volkswagen Romeo van.

And finally, a collaboration with ITS Turismo Marche - a post-graduate high-level training school that will see students from all over the region involved in the organization and media coverage of the event - and a twinning with the Napoli Bike Festival. Because the involvement of several actors fully represents the spirit of a choral initiative that wants to speak to everyone.

New rules

In England, cyclists may soon be subject to the same rules as motorists following a series of bills pending approval in the UK.

In fact, according to reports from the country's media, they may even have to drive with a license plate and insurance, not to mention the speed limits that they will have to respect, just like cars. The change was strongly requested by some government officials after the phenomenon of cycling literally exploded in the country.

The new laws could also provide for the withdrawal of points from the driving license in the event of infringements and high fines for exceeding the speed limits or passing with a red light. Insurance could be useful in the event that the most reckless cyclists run over or injure pedestrians. Victims could, in this way, ask for at least compensation. The new bills also refer to penalties for those caught riding a bicycle in a state of intoxication.

British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps explained that the rule change aims to end an "archaic" legal loophole that currently provides for cyclists to remain in jail for up to two years, even after killing a pedestrian. Writing in the Daily Mail, Shapps said: “I definitely propose to extend the speed limit restrictions to cyclists as well. This must happen in particular on roads where the maximum limit is 20 kilometers per hour ”.

“I don't want to stop people from cycling, it's a great way to get around. We have seen a real boom in cycling during Covid. Since then, I think this has had several health benefits. But I don't see any reason why cyclists have to break the road laws, they have to accelerate, they have to go red and always get away with it, ”he concluded.

Imprevisti

Here are the main unexpected events for cyclists and some suggestions on how to behave to deal with them in the best possible way.

PERFORATIONS
The mother of all the unexpected on a bike: a punctured wheel when you least expect it, perhaps when you are far from inhabited centers or while the sun sets and several kilometers separate you from the planned stage. This is not a serious problem or difficult to solve, but you need to know what to do and have the right tools to quickly resolve the emergency. For this reason, it is important to have the keys to remove the wheel, a repair kit for the inner tube, if not a replacement directly, levers to remove the tires and a bicycle pump. There are also products on the market that can offer a temporary solution, temporarily solve the problem to allow the cyclist to escape from an uncomfortable situation, such as inflating and repairing cans.

MECHANICAL BREAKDOWNS
Wear, long journeys, sometimes bumpy and an important load in the key points of the bike that lasts for a long time: these are the elements that contribute significantly to causing the mechanical parts of your vehicle to break. Brake cables and cleats, pedals and spokes are all elements that can break and for which it is good to have a spare part and the appropriate keys to intervene. Among the elements most subject to unforeseen events when riding a bike we also find the chain, a fundamental element that requires a special repair kit, consisting of a chain tool, caliper and spare links that will allow you to solve an otherwise really annoying setback. .

BAD WEATHER
Among the inconveniences for cyclists, those related to weather conditions are certainly the most complex to solve, as they are not controllable. However, careful planning and technical clothing that can protect against atmospheric agents can be two good solutions to minimize the hassles associated with this eventuality. A long stage or one that crosses mountainous areas can in fact expose you to sudden climate changes, rain and strong winds. Identifying in advance possible shelters or suitable places to shelter becomes essential, at least as much as having raincoats, windproof jackets and a gear to keep dry thanks to waterproof bags.

PHYSICAL DISEASES
Exposure to the sun, wind and rain are situations that, if managed superficially, can risk making the holiday end early. But pedaling for hours and hours, day after day, exposes you to other problems, such as pain and inflammation in the saddle, pain in the muscles of the legs, shoulders and arms, neck pain, calluses or small sores on the hands. . These are inconveniences that can become really annoying for a cyclist: a kit of drugs and products such as moisturizers, anti-inflammatory creams and multivitamins can contribute in a fundamental way to getting back on track every day with renewed vigor.

COURSE CHANGES
An incoming disturbance on your route, a road construction site, the presence of apparently aggressive dogs and no owners in sight on a country path: these are just some of the small and large unforeseen cycling events that a cyclist might have to face. In these cases it is important to be able to rely on alternative routes that allow you to avoid an excessive extension of the journey and allow you to arrive at your destination or choose an emergency destination. Often the difference between a small setback and a difficult problem is offered by the quality of the devices with which you have chosen to travel. Constantly updated software, navigation functions, clear and easily readable maps and batteries with great autonomy are essential elements in choosing the tools to rely on.

It will be greater attention to the environment and / or the need to return to health stimulated by the pandemic but many people are increasingly preferring mobility on foot or by bicycle. Even the mayors and mayors of some cities have pushed in this direction, thanks to the lockdowns, they took the opportunity to rethink their urban planning and to expand the cycle paths.

To go to work, to do physical activity or simply to be able to walk safely, cycle paths are the perfect solution, also to give a zero-impact alternative to citizens who otherwise in their absence have to move forcibly with polluting means. motor.

And it is the BBC that has published a short list with the cities that most of all have expanded their cycle and pedestrian network in recent years: there are 4 cities that stand out in the world for their commitment and one is in Italy.

The first mentioned is Paris, the French capital which, even before the arrival of the pandemic, was committed to making its streets more suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Already in 2016 the lower quays that run along the Seine were completely pedestrianized, but in 2020 with the new mayor Anne Hidalgo the city benefited from further changes.

“I have lived in Paris for 14 years and I can confidently say that I have never seen a greater transformation across the city than recently to encourage cyclists. The beauty of walking in Paris has been most appreciated since Covid, ”said Kathleen Peddicord, founder of Live and Invest Overseas. "Public transport has been banned for a long time and even the obligation to wear masks has made them more uncomfortable. Hence, more people have started to move on foot “.

In addition, it is planned to add another 180 km of cycle paths and 180,000 bicycle parking spaces by 2026. Not only that, in the plan there are also 170,000 trees to be planted to reduce the summer heat and allow pedestrians and cyclists to keep moving as well. in the hottest periods.

Bogota, like Colombia in general, is a bike-loving city and even before the pandemic the cycle network stretched for 550 km. Thanks to the fact that cycling is the national sport, the citizens of the South American capital greatly appreciated the addition of an additional 84km of cycle paths in 2020 by the mayor Claudia Lopez.

“In recent years the city has started to develop a remarkable atmosphere like those of Amsterdam and Copenhagen,” said Alex Gillard, founder of the Nomad Nature Travel blog who also lived in Bogotá. "There are so many bikes on the streets at all hours of the day, it's pretty exciting."

Another cycle-friendly intervention is the ban on cars to circulate in some areas of the cities on public holidays, returning the roads to cyclists, pedestrians and runners.

Italy, after China, was one of the countries most affected by the pandemic and the situation of overcrowded public transport did not help. Among the alternatives, our country has also decided to increase the kilometers of cycle paths in order to be able to give an alternative to people who could not or wanted to travel by car or public transport.

One Italian city among all, however, has brought about the biggest changes: Milan.
In summer 2020, the Lombard capital embarked on an ambitious plan to expand sidewalks and cycle paths along 35 km of roads previously focused on car traffic.

“It's not the Milan of 10 years ago that I remember during my university days,” said Luisa Favaretto, founder of the Strategistico website. “I love the concept of the 15-minute city [the same as Paris, which requires one person to do everything within 15 minutes of home], and I've seen an increase in the sense of 'old world' community, as there are more reasons to be outdoors and meet in common areas ".

The district of Milan par excellence as far as pedestrian and green areas are concerned is CityLife. "It is full of public green spaces along with tons of cycle paths and offers a glimpse into the future of a sustainable Milan," said Favaretto.

Slow Street, this is the name of the program that San Francisco grounded during the pandemic with which it reduced the speed limit of cars and increased cycle paths, so as to increase the safety of pedestrians, runners, cyclists, etc.

According to the data collected, thanks to Slow Street car traffic has decreased by 50% and on weekdays pedestrian traffic has increased by 17% and cycling by 65%.

While there is still a long way to go to make San Francisco a truly pedestrian city, history shows it can be done. One of the most accessible areas of the city - the Embarcadero along the waterfront - was once a highway until an earthquake in 1989 made it unusable for vehicles.

Important choices that all cities in the world should consider and implement, also because, as a study published in Science Direct says, if preferred every day, the bike can reduce emissions by up to 84%.
