Baron Carl Friedrich Ludwig Christian Von Drais was born in Karlsruke, Germany, on 24 April 1785 and died there on 12 December 1851.
Mechanics was always his greatest passion. He invented and built, among other things, an excavator, a typewriter and a reflector. Then he wanted to devote his every study and every activity to the creation of a vehicle that could move only for the energy impressed by the driver himself. At first he attempted with a kind of four-wheeled carriage, which he himself had also presented in 1815 to the historic congress in Vienna, but the idea was soon dismissed by the excessive weight of the car.

Von Drais thought of using two wheels alone. It was not a completely new idea. As usual, it had precedents in the ancient China, where there was still and still exists a single-wheeled vehicle, also before the French revolution a certain monsieur de Sivrac had offered admiration of the court aristocracy, in the garden of the Tuilleries , its «celerifero», while in 1784 the mechanic Ignaz Trexier of Graz had designed and built a similar machine.

No one before Von Drais, however, had been able to build a vehicle that could be driven and even reach the speed of 16 km per hour.

It was basically a bicycle: the man sat astride a rudimentary saddle and pushed the vehicle until it reached the maximum possible speed, alternately leaning on the ground now one hour and the other foot and making a lever. Von Drais called his invention "velocipede", but his contemporaries preferred to call it "draissienne" from his name.
Von Drais managed to go from Echwetzingen to Mannheim riding his car: many incredulous had to change his mind. Soon the inventor was able to sell the license to make the "draissienne" in France, England and even in America.

In 1819 the English and French post offices endowed their postmen. Footwear factories are also pleased with the ever-increasing popularity of the velocipede, since the wearer consumed shoes more than normal, and they were made of special ones with a metal sole. In England the "draissienne" was imposed with the vogue of a new and everywhere arose schools in which the use of the "wild-horses" was taught.

The British manufacturer Knight made some improvements to it. The vehicle, however, still cost too much to become popular, missing the possibility of making it in series: 500 francs.

It was the apprentice blacksmith Ernest Michaux of Bar-le-Duc who first worked on the transformation of the "draissienne" into something more like a modern bicycle. This happened in 1855: Michaux was entrusted with a velocipede for a repair to the front wheel and he had the idea to apply a pedal to this, so that the vehicle could move and get the impulse of the driver could sit in the saddle on a horse. The new machine was presented in 1867 at the world exhibition and soon spread everywhere.

In 1868 at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris took place the first velocipedistic race in the world and all the competitors naturally showed off the latest models of the «michauline». The route was given by the writer's secretary Emilio Zola, Richard Lesclide and the race was won by Englishman James Moore, who traveled 126 km. in 10 hours and 40 '.

The French government planned to use the "michaulines" in its army for the order-carrying service, but the war unleashed by the Germans in 1870 set the project forever.
The English industry was soon able to overcome the French one in the construction of new vehicles, supplanting it and collecting its legacy. The British manufacturers used light steel tubes, thus obtaining less heavy and more resistant machines than solid iron ones with wooden wheels manufactured until then.

Gradually and constantly they brought new improvements to the bicycle, first adopting in 1877 - in a model that was called "kangaroo" - the chain transmission, then replacing the high wheels with the low ones, applying the multiply and - after the invention of Dunlop - the tires.

Even later, the improvements were continuous and noteworthy: ball bearings, brakes, light metal production in series and a thousand other innovations made the bicycle which it is today. Certainly the baron Von Drais did not imagine that his creature would have come a long way and would have continued to live, to thrive even in the era of motorcycles, ultra-fast cars and jet airplanes. Nor could he have foreseen that, having become a means of sporting competitions, around him and in the name of Bartali, Coppi, Kubler, or Koblet, the fires of popular passions would flare up.

La bici raccontata

Andrea Veronese, rodigino giornalista, fotografo e viaggiatore,

Andrea Veronese, a journalist, photographer and traveler from Rovigo, has always cultivated the passion for the journey that represents for him the central pivot of life, motivated by curiosity, by the desire for knowledge and adventure. The bicycle is part of his many travels and his passions. In the last ten years he has toured almost all of Europe by bicycle and there have also been experiences in other continents such as Canada and Southeast Asia.
Last year, he embarked on an extraordinary cycling trip in the Middle East. Pedaling the Middle East is the journey that Andrea described at the meeting La Bici Raccontata in Rovigo.
Transported by plane his bicycle to Tel Aviv, he made more than 2,000 km, starting from Tel Aviv, crossing Israel and Jordan, cutting through Jerusalem and what remains of Palestine, with two travel bags, a single-seater tent and a great desire to ride.
The Bici Raccontata is a proposal by Fiab Rovigo; intends to be an opportunity "to travel from a standstill" through the story of others or to get directions and advice to deal with their own, perhaps consulting the program of social activities 2019. Above all it represents, as well as a moment to meet, a pleasant way to spread the culture of cycling: the means not only for adventures, travels and excursions but also for everyday use, as a means of travel to go to work or school. A choice to be made consciously and that recalls the responsibility of every citizen who, with a small-great gesture, can contribute to reducing pollution, decongesting traffic, improving one's own health and that of one's own city.
For these reasons the La Bici Raccontata initiative is open to the public and with pleasure the association finds growing participation and appreciation of the public made up of members and not.

Gino Bartali.

Gino Bartali was not only a great sportsman but above all a great man. It is now known to all that the cyclist was able to save the lives of at least 800 Jews, delivering false documents to refugees in the convents of Tuscany and Umbria. Noble gesture retraced with a painstaking historical reconstruction in the book 'Gino Bartali. A bike against fascism ', written by the journalist Alberto Toscano, which was presented on January 27 in Florence, in the Sala delle Ex Leopoldine in Piazza Tasso.

"My father was a silent hero. The thing he could do better - Luigi Bartali recalled - was pedaling. With this excuse he made about 45 trips to Assisi and surroundings to take these falsified documents that saved so many lives. He said he did not know anything because, so he said: "If they stop me I do not have to lie."

The book begins by proposing a rereading of peasant Italy, which in the bicycle had its fundamental means of locomotion. For many children of that peasant Italy, like Bartali and Coppi, cycling is a passion and then a job. Become the social elevator, which allows you to make your way successfully in life.

The life and personality of Gino Bartali are described in the book thanks to a series of partly unpublished testimonies, including those of the two living sons of Gino and his nephew Gioia, daughter of the first-born Andrea.

When days get shorter and the temperatures drop, it is more difficult to get out on a bike.

Here are some good reasons that can help us to ride constantly even in winter:

  • LOST THE HOLIDAYS WEIGHT!
By keeping the "pedal" routine, you can relieve stress, dispose of the weight of party sprees and stay in touch with your body.
  • SAVE!
Using public transport from November to April would cost around € 550, the equivalent of a nice holiday ... or a new bike for the next season!
  • HELP OUR COUNTRY!
According to a study published by the UN, if the major European cities invested in "healthy transport", over 75 thousand people could find work.
If Rome would adopt the same model of bike sharing in Copenhagen (Europe's leading city with 26% of the city transport on two wheels) could create more than 3 thousand new jobs and could save almost 200 lives in a year.

Did we convince you?
And then remember ... those who ride bikes have more friends!

NuBike

A chainless bike that winds around the carbon fiber frame and a combination of wheels, brakes, handlebars, saddle and other components chosen by the cyclist designed by Rodger Parker, ex US videomaker.

The system eliminates the traditional pedaling because to move it is sufficient to push the pedals up and down. A mode that according to the designer ensures two important advantages:

  • you go faster with less effort and pedaling allows you to stress less knees, hips and ankles.
  • The ease of assembly of the bike is reflected, however, in the simplicity of removing the rear wheel and, in case, put the bike parts in the car or put it in safety.

To date, the prototype weighs about 10 kilos but Mr. Parker is convinced to go down to 8 with some improvements in development.

THE WORLD WILL LOVE NUBIKE !!!

"The yellow bicycle is an idea of attainable happiness."

The presentation of the fairy tale in the eighth rhyme illustrated "The Yellow Bicycle" (Topipittori, 2018) took place on Saturday 19, at the Museo della Grafica, at Palazzo Lanfranchi, through a conversation with the authors Matteo Pelliti and Riccardo Guasco.
«In January 2016 - Pelliti recalls - I sent Topipittori to the Milanese publisher the idea of a little fairy tale around a bicycle. My first book of poetry, Versi Ciclabili, of 2007, spoke of bicycles, and in that collection of poems dedicated to the bicycle there was a text, "Childish Memory", in which I told the disappointment of a bicycle-scrap received as a gift from a child . Hence the idea of this story, which links a father, a son and a yellow bicycle together ».

Pelliti had never written a text for an illustrated book dedicated explicitly to children, but it was certain that he wanted Riccardo Guasco as an illustrator, an artist who has established himself internationally thanks to his originality in dealing with the world of bicycle and cycling.
He knew his work for some time and with him he shared not only his love for cycling, but also precise aesthetic references, such as the taste for art of the early twentieth century.
The protagonist of the fairy tale is a child named Giovannino. He has a passion for cycling and wants a bicycle. Yellow. New flaming. The father, trying to fulfill his wish, finds an old loom and gets to work. But for Giovannino, everything that is old is ugly.
And then, despair! As long as an extraordinary vehicle comes out of his father's garage.
"It is no longer a toy - says Pelliti - is the real desire that is realized and it is important because for the first time become autonomous and you must learn to stay in balance, the bicycle comes to life for its anthropometric relationship with the human body , was born to adapt to it, it is animated, just as my poetry intends and recites ".

The bicycle and the child. The relationship between the object, not any one, and the human being, which is subject. What is the actor? Maybe both. Yes, divine interlocking, perfect mechanism, mediation, interaction, meta-communication. And finally: completeness.
This is a fairy tale. And it is the result of a union of ideas. A fairy tale that tells a story. A story that tells the story of a journey. A journey that has "the scent of life", where "before every descent is a climb".

The designers of PEUGEOT Design Lab have designed and built a compact bike that folds easily to facilitate multi-modal use.

It is the second prize obtained from the PEUGEOT folding bike to electrical assistance eF01 from its commercialization, which took place just over a year ago. The jury has rewarded the concept of mobility of the last kilometer expressed by the realization of the Casa del Leone.

The bike allows the user to travel the last kilometers of his journey after having parked his vehicle, perhaps close to the city center. The bike can be recharged in the trunk of the car when the vehicle is running or connecting it to a classic power outlet. Its autonomy reaches 30 kilometers and the maximum speed is 20 km / h.

https://www.parlament.ch/it/ratsbetrieb/suche-curia-vista/geschaeft?AffairId=20184409

By bicycle, one in ten accidents occurs when a rider is overtaken by a motor vehicle.
It is necessary to consider that those who pedal do not have a protective body and are therefore very vulnerable, especially if one thinks of children and the elderly.

It should also be noted that the use of the bicycle as a means of daily transport and as a sporting and tourist activity is increasingly in vogue.
Cycle mobility is increasingly becoming a real smart alternative to both private and public transport, especially in the agglomerations.

There is no precise regulation in Switzerland regarding the lateral overtaking of cyclists.
Through a motion, Roberto Cattaneo, national councilor, asked the Federal Council to determine by law the overtaking distance of the velocipedes by filing the following motion:

https://www.parlament.ch/it/ratsbetrieb/suche-curia-vista/geschaeft?AffairId=20184409

A different regulation, taking into account the characteristics of the road section in question.
The problem does not exist only in Switzerland. More than 13 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France have already introduced similar rules.

At a time when bike mobility is increasingly appreciated, road safety is essential.

Therefore, when overcoming it takes a lot of caution on the part of the vehicles.
A rule also in Switzerland would above all help to sensitize and therefore reduce the risk of unnecessary and serious accidents.

Ciclo Registro

Bicycle theft is a decidedly unpleasant phenomenon, which in Italy affects 320,000 unfortunate owners every year.

For this reason, Confindustria ANCMA (National Association of Motorcycle Accessories Cycle) has launched the Registry Cycle, a free web portal for the registration of online frames, traceability and aggregation of all existing web realities to protect the sector and consumers.
The proposal, which came after the two days of BiciAcademy - the training event dedicated to shopkeepers of the cycle sector organized by the association at the Palacongressi of Rimini - aims to fight once and for all the scourge of bicycle thefts.

By accessing the web portal Register Cycle you can register the chassis number of the bikes sold and produce a "digital certificate of ownership" for free.
The objective of the Confindustria ANCMA initiative - promoted also in Parliament in the context of the reform of the Highway Code - is to build a database of the national park, by aggregating all the best online experiences into a single platform. existing.

The portal - institutional and free - will improve the ways in which to counter the problem of theft, for example by helping the police to identify immediately if a bicycle is stolen and who is its rightful owner. Without forgetting the new perspectives regarding the introduction of products and specific insurance coverage for cyclists.

With the Registry Cycle it intends to protect the owners and consumers, but also the protagonists of the Italian cycle sector (retailers and industry), first in Europe and recently protagonist of some initiatives to promote their use and will also contribute to rebalancing the market of used, altered by stolen phenomena precisely because of theft.
