Cortemilia

Francesco chiede aiuto attraverso i social network.

Francesco was 18 when he was urgently called home. Father Roberto had a bicycle accident, it's serious. The man fights, resists, comes out of the coma. But he is a vegetable. Doctors and neurologists have no remedy, but suggest stimulating Roberto with an emotion so strong as to generate a reaction.

Francis asks for help through social networks. Matteo, a friend and opponent of his father when he was an active athlete, replies. He proposes to repeat a race of many years before in Cortemilia, a village in the Langhe. It is a match that marked an important moment in the career of the young Roberto. Reliving it could generate the emotions needed to awaken him. Francesco offers to impersonate his father, but it's not that simple.

He will have to learn to ride a bike as well as his dad because, to arouse the necessary emotional shock, the ride will have to be credible. A hard training period begins in which Roberto's companions take turns alongside Francesco and teach him everything there is to know about cycling.

Tuvalum

Not only smartphones can be reconditioned but also bicycles…

And Tuvalum is the service that, in addition to reconditioning used bikes, certifies and guarantees them for 12 months.

Born in 2014 and present in Italy since 2021, it was conceived by two Spaniards who created a second-hand bike buying and selling system throughout Europe, and which has now become the largest laboratory of reconditioned, certified and guaranteed bicycles team of expert mechanics, according to the highest quality standards at European level.

The novelty (and the added value) compared to other used bike marketplaces is the guarantee and certification system that Tuvalum ensures for each bicycle: once overhauled and reconditioned in the internal workshop, the bicycles for sale are equipped with the Tuvalum guarantee seal Certified: a certification that guarantees the same technical requirements that the European Union requires for new bicycles, in compliance with the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD, 2001/95/EC) and with Directive 168/2013.

All bicycles sold through Tuvalum also offer a 12-month warranty and the opportunity to return the bicycle purchased through the platform at any time within the next 18 months.

A further interesting element for potential buyers is the wide availability of reconditioned bicycles – racing or city bikes, mountain bikes or e-bikes – thanks to which Tuvalum can provide an increasingly personalized and efficient service, and satisfy requests throughout Europe. within a maximum of five days.

Altri ancora, come Giappone e Svizzera, preferiscono i mezzi pubblici.

The transport sector is responsible for a quarter of global fuel-related greenhouse gas emissions, and half of these emissions come from passenger cars. Not only that, forecasts indicate that the global demand for road transport will increase by about three times by 2050. With these prospects, being able to mitigate the climate effect of transport is difficult. A possible solution was proposed in an article published in Nature communications earth and environment, and comes from the example of some countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands. Here, in fact, society and infrastructure have adapted to promote the use of bicycles, especially for small daily trips. And the impact, in terms of the health of the planet and the population, would be considerable.

That in the countries of continental Europe, especially the more northern ones, there is a lot of cycling is not new: it is enough just to cross the border of the Alps and the cycle paths are wasted. The use of the bike not only for sporting purposes but as a means of transport is widespread in countries such as Austria, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, and the municipal administrations have adapted accordingly. In the study, the authors compiled a series of global data on bicycle production, trade, stock and ownership by country from 1962 to 2015. Looking at the number of bicycles per capita, the top rankings are Denmark, Holland , Norway. These are countries, write the authors, in which the transport system (including public transport) works in such a way as to fully satisfy the needs of the population, and in which the motive for using the bicycle is cultural: the search for a more greener and healthier. The bike, in fact, is a good alternative to avoid making short journeys every day by car, and on the one hand it helps to mitigate the environmental impact of transport, and on the other it helps to solve the problem of extreme sedentary lifestyle in modern society.

Italy, on the other hand, finds itself in a situation in which car ownership has increased faster than bicycle ownership and, in general, remains the prevalent means of transport. Other countries, which cover large areas and often require long journeys to get from one place to another, such as the United States, Australia and Canada, despite having a large number of bikes, base their transport on the car. Still others, such as Japan and Switzerland, prefer public transport. Lastly, globally, the countries where the bicycle is less widespread are those with a lower GDP per capita.

Virtuous examples of how all these conditions have been reflected in the availability of the population and have spread the daily use of the bicycle are Denmark and the Netherlands. If everyone behaved like the Danes, that is, they cycled as much as they do, around 414 million tonnes of CO2 emitted would be saved, essentially equal to the emissions of the United Kingdom in 2015. If the even more virtuous levels of the Netherlands were reached, instead, the CO2 cut would reach 686 million tons, equivalent to 86% of the emissions of the whole of Germany in the same year. How many km per day are we talking about? Very few: 1.6 km for Denmark, one more for Holland.

When designing a building, parking for bicycles will be mandatory: this is the proposal arrived from the European Commission and supported by the Council of member states. In fact, since the end of 2021, the European Union has been grappling with the update of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (Epbd) which outlines the objectives and measures that member states must implement to improve the energy performance of their buildings . A step forward was taken at the end of October 2022, with the council document in which the European approach is described by points, giving a sort of "general orientation".

Basically, "at least two places for bicycles for each housing unit" are foreseen in new residential buildings where there are at least three parking spaces. In non-residential buildings, a bicycle space is provided for each parking space when there are more than 20 parking spaces, while in new buildings or buildings to be renovated when there are more than five parking spaces. A novelty aimed at promoting the use of the bicycle, hampered by the lack of easily accessible and safe spaces. The Commission, the Council and the European Parliament will start negotiations to discuss and finalize the revision in 2023. The objectives are multiple. In fact, on-site parking can encourage the reduction of CO2 emissions from transport, can stimulate lower domestic energy consumption as well as promote more sustainable modes of transport.

The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), one of Europe's leading cycling promotion organisations, plays an important role in lobbying the European Parliament to ensure a clear and effective review of the directive. In particular, it aims to make the derogation possibilities more difficult to apply and provides suggestions for the actual requirements useful for the construction of car parks.

He generally regards this decision as a step in the right direction but underlines the need to have space dedicated to bikes also in existing buildings, given that 85-95 percent of those present today will still be standing in 2050. Not entirely convincing hence the passage which says that existing buildings will only need to ensure “adequate spaces” when the provision of two parking spaces is not feasible during the renovation process.

For the cycling federation, although it seems admissible to allow some kind of opt-out clause, the process and possible justification reasons (such as lack of physical space) must be defined in much more detail to avoid abuses. He also recalls that six member states (Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland and Luxembourg) have already publicly stated that they want a more progressive text at the end of the negotiations.

The directive also covers non-residential buildings such as offices, shopping centers and cinemas. For existing buildings with over 20 parking spaces, a bicycle parking space is provided for each parking space, while for new buildings or buildings to be renovated, a bicycle parking space is provided for each car when there are more than five parking spaces. However, an "opt-out" clause has also been included, i.e. a delegation that allows member states to adapt non-residential requirements "where bicycles are generally less used as a means of transport" and to "ensure the number of parking spaces for suitable bicycles" in renovated residential buildings where "two bicycle spaces for each house are not feasible".

Furthermore, there are no provisions on the space to be dedicated to larger bicycles, such as long tails and cargo bikes, as well as charging points for electric bicycles. All that remains is to wait for the final text of the European Parliament with the directive on energy performance in buildings which already stands as a turning point at European level.

Apple's debut in the mobility sector is now only a matter of time. And it's not so obvious that the debut will come with the long-awaited electric car. Yes, because it could be anticipated by an electric bike with an Apple. Talking about it to Bloomberg is Horace Dediu, an analyst specializing in the events of Cupertino: "I firmly believe that in the field of mobility there is no better product for Apple than a vehicle dedicated to micro-mobility".

That doesn't mean the electric car isn't on the cards yet. Indeed, the project is confirmed and according to the latest rumors the car will arrive in 2025. The electric bike project would be added to the existing ones and - being simpler - could have shorter development times. But where did this idea come from?

Apple's situation is quite well known: the company led by Tim Cook, despite a certainly not easy context, has stratospheric profits thanks to the sale of electronic products and has an almost infinite spending capacity, also thanks to a monstrous capitalization of 2.26 thousand billions of dollars.

But making an electric car is complex and over the last ten years the Project Titan (this is the internal name) has undergone various rethinking and just as many slowdowns. Furthermore, when Apple enters the world of electric cars it will be facing stiff competition and at a time when, hopefully, the market could be recovering. And this is where the idea of the e-bike comes in.

The electric bicycle market has been growing very strongly for at least two years and shows no sign of slowing down. The landscape is rapidly evolving and new balances can be easier to create. BloombergNEF estimates that in 2040 there will be 750 million 2- or 3-wheel electric vehicles on the road compared to 700 million cars. Of course, the average prices will be different, but Apple, in the field of soft mobility, could do what it did with electronic products: present an object that redefines the category and establishes itself as a point of reference for design, technical characteristics, general palatability.

Also because the sector is in full transformation. We started from e-bikes as simple electric bikes with a motor and a battery attached to the frame but now there are an infinite number of vehicles with different shapes, sizes and architectures.

Apple designers could use this moment to create something unique. They could even invent a new category. Apple has not yet confirmed that it is working on an electric bicycle. The only clue on the subject concerns a 12-year-old patent for connecting an iPod to an e-bike. Not enough to draw conclusions. But rumors are starting to circulate.

Dell'andare in bicicletta e altre divagazioni.

Testi di: Edmondo De Amicis, Olindo Guerrini, Alfred Jarry, Jerome K. Jerome, Vernon Lee, Cesare Lombroso, Alfredo Panzini, Emilio Salgari, Octave Thanet, H.G. Wells, Vamba, Frances Willard. Prefazione di Marco Pastonesi.

How many ways can you ride a bike? If you think there is only one answer, you are wrong, and the stories in this collection will prove it to you.

Here you will find Alfred Jarry's cyclists who feed on alcohol concentrate tablets and reach unimagined speeds racing against a train, as well as Olindo Guerrini's amusing dreamlike escape on two wheels and Emilio Salgari's "bicyclists" who, with their half ride on the ice of the Pole no less. And not only are the ways of riding a bicycle unexpected, but also the reasons why it is done: Frances Willard, American suffragette, learns to pedal to feel freer, while the protagonist of Jerome K. Jerome's story does it to repair non-existent breakdowns and subjects analyzed by Cesare Lombroso to commit robberies...

Many bikes for many great authors, some with texts still unpublished in Italy. Texts by: Edmondo De Amicis, Olindo Guerrini, Alfred Jarry, Jerome K. Jerome, Vernon Lee, Cesare Lombroso, Alfredo Panzini, Emilio Salgari, Octave Thanet, H.G. Wells, Vamba, Frances Willard. Preface by Marco Pastonesi.

Pin Bike

Encourage the use of the bicycle for the home-school or home-work journey through mobility vouchers. This is the goal of Pin Bike, the initiative promoted by the Municipality of Bergamo presented at a press conference on Tuesday morning at Palazzo Frizzoni.

Mobility councilor Stefano Zenoni explains: "Pin Bike provides an economic incentive for those who decide to use the bike as a means of transport and is part of the ministerial funding of the ecological transition, which has seen Bergamo involved in the Bus and Bike project, in which velostation is included. Started a few years ago as a corporate project, with good mobility for employees of the Municipality, Atb and the Province, albeit with many difficulties related to smart working and the pandemic, a phase dedicated to citizens is now opening ".

But how does it actually work?

“We monitor the use of bikes by residents in the municipality of Bergamo for those who travel with alternative and gentle mobility, whether they work or study here or outside, and depending on the kilometers covered, financial rewards are given for their commitment. We thought that these vouchers could be spent in the city's shops, not on online shops, to make it a reason to support us to promote the livability of the city that animates our centre. For this reason we have contacted the District of Commerce”, continues the commissioner.

“Our mission is to fill the gap between those who know how to pedal and who own a bike but don't use it as a means of transport - says Annarita Leserri of Pin Bike -. The system is simple and is based on three main elements: the sensor that is mounted on the handlebar, a signal LED, a reflective plate. This is followed by the possibility of downloading the app to record one's journeys and access prizes and incentives”.

The app also allows you to map your routes and the kilometers covered. At the same time, citizens can receive notifications and send reports, attaching photos to also highlight the problems of the roadways. This project was tested on 200 city civil servants and provided for a refund of 0.30 euros per kilometre, with a maximum of 17 euros per month".

Now Pin Bike is being extended to other city categories, open to all citizens of legal age, and to city merchants. “The first 500 citizens available will be welcomed, with a refund of 0.25 cents per kilometer with a maximum refund of 30 euros per month which will be disbursed in the form of vouchers. There will also be extra prizes for those who use the velostation as the final destination of their journey. The project will have a duration of 3 months and will start on 3 October”, concludes Zenoni.

The registration phase for citizens will start from 23 September to collect the kit, while from 3 October the kilometers will begin to be counted and from the end of the month it will be possible to take advantage of the first vouchers, from 10 euros onwards, which can also be spent from the following month.

GenerTRX

From UltraTRX could come a solution capable of solving what is probably the main problem of electric vehicles and in particular of electric bikes: we are referring to their limited autonomy.

The electric mobility sector and the companies that deal with batteries deserve credit for having made considerable progress in recent years and the most recent models of electric bikes can recharge in very short times although the dreamed of goal has not yet been reached by many, namely the possibility of using a vehicle that recharges itself while it is in motion, thus making recharging only a distant memory.

GenerTRX is the name of the system designed by UltraTRX to try to revolutionize the life of electric bike owners: it is a tiny device with several coils that is mounted on the brake rotor of a bicycle and works as a sort of alternator.

Basically, the coils located inside the GenerTRX's clamp-shaped structure generate alternating current, which a circuit converts into direct current, allowing it to reach the battery to be stored.

According to UltraTRX, this system would be able to produce between 30% and 50% more autonomy than the battery alone could provide (for example, at an average speed of 16 km/h it is possible to produce approximately 2 amps of power with two rotors installed, one on each wheel).

This will not allow for unlimited autonomy, but without a doubt this solution could be able to guarantee the owners of an electric bike to extend its range, recharging the vehicle while they are on the go.

It remains to be seen whether the UltraTRX solution will make its way onto the market.
