Cyclee

A mounted device that projects signals on cyclists’ backs might soon improve the relationship between road-users of every sort.
Conceived by Azerbaijani designer Elnur Babayev, the Cyclee will display different illuminated signs depending on the rider’s actions. The projected images can be modified on mobile devices and transferred to the projector, which then displays the appropriate signal on the cyclist’s back.

Signs change depending on the actions of the rider.

With the help of special chipset which inserted in device the entire programme can be edited wirelessly. Projected signs can be modified via mobile application and then transferred to device.
Cyclee can be mounted to various bicycle models and the mounting part changes depending on bicycle model.

A bike is a vehicle for change

In a year when cycling levels increased by as much as 350% and thousands of people took to their bikes to keep themselves and their communities safe, British Cycling has dedicated this year’s Christmas video to the power of the humble bicycle.

During the first national lockdown in the spring 1.2 million more people cycled for leisure or sport, as the country enjoyed the warm weather, quieter roads and benefit to their mental wellbeing. Figures from the Bicycle Association show that retailers have seen sales grow by 60% since March, while many more riders revived old ones found in sheds and garages.

Throughout the year British Cycling members have continued to receive peace of mind liability cover, legal support and up-to-date guidance on cycling activities from the national governing body, with the number of those opting for Commute membership cover growing particularly strongly. At the same time, the support of our members has enabled us to support the sport through a challenging period and lay the foundations for returning it to full health in 2021.

Commenting on the film’s launch, British Cycling Head of Customer Engagement, Laura Thomas, said:

“This year hasn’t been without change, but the power of our bikes has never been quite so clear. We all know the individual benefits of cycling in terms of our physical and mental health, but through this video we wanted to show that everybody who rides a bike – no matter how fast or how far – is playing a part in making the country a happier, healthier and greener place.

“Over the past decade we’ve seen an incredible rise in the number of people joining British Cycling as members, contributing to the ongoing development of our sport at all levels and helping us to support even more people to ride for fun, fitness or simply an easier way to get around. At the end of a year when over a million more people have discovered this joy for themselves, we hope that many of them will join us for the journey too.”

Last year, British Cycling charted the journey of BMX star Kye Whyte from receiving his first #ChristmasBike aged three to the cusp of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which was viewed over 350,000 times.

Ripartono i Tee train!

L’effetto Greta rilancia sulle rotaie europee i mitici Trans Europe Express (Tee).

The Greta effect relaunches the legendary Trans Europe Express (Tee) on European rails. The German, French, Swiss and Austrian railways have reached an agreement to restart direct and high-speed services between different nations as early as 2021 without changing trains, without customs controls and with special night services. The "Tee 2.0" - as they have been renamed - will start at the end of next year with the Vienna-Munich-Paris and Zurich-Cologne-Amsterdam routes and from 2022 the connections from Zurich should extend southwards to Rome (via Milano Lambrate) and Barcelona. The journey from Rome to Amsterdam should take around 13 hours. The four railway companies have agreed to standardize prices, reservation systems and controls. And contrary to the glorious predecessors of the Tee lineage - which offered only first class tickets - they will also have cheaper offers with the possibility of tariff concessions approved by the European Union. "It is a way to offer alternative mobility with very low ecological impact," said Vincent Ducrot, CEO of the Swiss network, announcing that by 2024 the offer from Switzerland will increase from 5 to 24 routes.
The resurrection of the TEE comes at a time of great transformation for the EU transport market. The old version of this service was actually born together with the idea of a United Europe with the launch by the Cee in 1957 of the Trans Europe Express, the fast and luxury connections that became a sort of status symbol and synonymous with travel for the rich. Especially for the generation of baby-boomers who started moving to the Old Continent with Interrail. To bring this network down was the advent of low-cost airlines. Little by little, the Tee service went into decline and disappeared altogether in the mid-9s.
The relaunch arises from two factors: the first is the liberalization of high-speed transport in Europe and the possibility today of traveling on more uniform rolling stock that does not require you to change locomotive or carriages due to power or gauge problems. The second, in fact, is the Greta effect, or the birth of a generation of environmentally aware travelers who do not want to travel by air for ecological reasons: a return trip between London and Paris by rail generates 22 kg. of CO2 against the 244 of a jet. On the Milan Rome we are at 14 kg. against 94. It seemed a passing fashion. Instead, this small market niche not only resists but continues to grow. And it justified the choice of the four train giants to exhume the glorious Tees from the railway anthologies.

We will be closer and closer and you will be able to reach your beach house more easily !!!

Bike TourGether

The journey of hope, for those suffering from cystic fibrosis, is also called Bike TourGether.

In the title of the book by Matteo Marzotto, entrepreneur and cyclist since ever, there is a strong message: the struggles for good causes, as well as the most convivial rides are done together, joining forces, passing on ideas, solidarity and water bottles. The book (Cairoeditore), whose proceeds are totally donated, tells of the Bike Tours carried out throughout the Peninsula to raise awareness on the issue of cystic fibrosis and create fundraising events. The background dates back to 1989. In that year, the loss of his sister Annalisa, "my guardian angel", suffering from cystic fibrosis, moves Matteo's intentions in the direction of solidarity.

We are at the end of a 2020 that is certainly unexpected and difficult in every respect but, despite everything, there is a desire to think about good resolutions for 2021, to look forward and return to life. For a few months we will still be bound by some limitations, but the gaze, the thought, the ideas also go, and fortunately, beyond today and in different directions.

The request for rebirth that emerges from individuals and the community is inextricably linked to issues such as environmental protection, new mobility, sustainability and health: even in the draft for the use of the Recovery Fund resources, the Government would allocate an important part of it " to the green revolution and ecological transition ”and the infrastructures necessary to implement sustainable mobility.

In recent months, the forced stop has purified the air of the most polluted cities. The need for distancing and measures in favor of sustainable mobility - from the bicycle bonus to the development of new cycling infrastructures - have pushed a strong growth in the use of bicycles in all urban journeys: to go to work, to school or to shop in neighborhood shops. Cycle tourism, then, was among the protagonists of the summer and, also for 2021, a trend towards active holidays in Italy with forms of slow tourism - just like cycling - is expected to discover the territories of our country: a solution that supports, among other things, small local economies.

One of the good intentions for 2021 could therefore be actively supporting the "bike revolution" underway, by joining the FIAB-Italian Federation of the Environment and Bicycle, a reality that for over thirty years has been promoting the use of bicycle in an area of urban and extra-urban environmental requalification.

Becoming a FIAB member (€ 30 annual card as an ordinary member) also reserves many advantages, first of all the RC Bici insurance, which covers for damage caused to third parties by cycling and which is valid throughout Europe.

The FIAB 2021 card - also ideal for a useful and sustainable gift to a friend or family member - also entitles you to a series of discounts and benefits in numerous affiliated businesses and services and privileged access to the program of initiatives, excursions, trips and events organized throughout the year throughout Italy. Also for FIAB members, a subscription to the BC magazine (the paper magazine that deals with urban cycling, environment and cycle tourism) is reserved for the special price of 6 euros for the whole year if subscribed at the same time as joining FIAB. Finally, for those who register online, an Ediciclo e-book is given as a gift.

A simple bicycle can change and inspire the way of living and thinking ...

The road to happiness can be traveled by pushing on the pedals, in harmony with oneself and with a nature that we fully appreciate thanks to the rhythms of the two wheels.

With the right amount of mindfulness, every cyclist can develop a profound and creative approach to the complexity of existence, similar to that of Albert Einstein.

Not by chance a friend of the bicycle.

The record would last until 3 October 1995, when Dutch cyclist Fred Rompelberg pedaled in the wake of a dragster at 268,831 km / h, a record that is still standing.
  • In 2017, Mark Beaumont broke the cycling world record around the world, completing the 18,000-mile course in just 79 days. I'm on average 240 miles a day and over 16 hours of riding a day.
  • The popular type of BMX bike was created in the 1970s as a cheaper alternative to motocross racing.

Among other innovations, the RideControl Ergo controls, positioned on the handlebar, stand out: it is a small "command center" that allows those who ride to select the type of support they want and check basic information such as the remaining battery charge and the selected support. . Working in harmony with the RideControl Ergo controls are the Smart Assist mode, which intervenes automatically to provide the right pedaling support, and the Walk Assist function, which helps cyclists to restart from stationary even on the most demanding mixed terrain.

Marco Tuttolomondo

Here is an interesting article of Pietro illarietti published on Tutto Bici.

Google Maps finally activates the icon for cyclists. From 10 December it is in fact possible to use this useful function to move from one place to another, with your bike, taking into account the cycle routes.

An initiative that could also be closely linked to the current pandemic situation that has led more and more people to use alternative and green mobility.

From February to today, requests for cycle routes on Google have increased by 69% and the service is active in 30 countries. To be able to provide updated information, the system uses a combination of data and machine learning (artificial intelligence learning that improves with time and experience).

The Mountain View company claims that they are working intensively to be able to keep the function updated due to the continuous implementation of the city cycle paths, again due to the situation linked to Covid. In addition, the search for "bike repair near me" has doubled since a year ago.

Lo sapevi che ...

Did you know that ... The secret of the Darwinian evolution of machines is a bicycle?

At the London Science Museum it is possible to admire the original Rover safety bicycle from 1885, the first modern bicycle substantially identical to those in common use still today. Thanks to the advertisements of the time, we also know the price: twelve pounds (about 1,500 pounds today discounting with the cost of living but, in reality, much more considering the distribution of wealth). Rover, the same company that produces cars, thus began its history, even if the very idea of bicycle, apart from the nomenclature, was born well before, in 1817. The development of the bicycle had already reached its first maturity with several leaps technological. And the chronicles of the time allow us to talk about a first commercial boom already in the sixties and seventies of the nineteenth century. But it is interesting to analyze what happened to the so-called "penny-farthing", those bicycles with a very small rear wheel and an abnormal front wheel (the name comes from the comparison with the two English coins, the penny and the tiny farthing coin of the time ). In fact, using the language of biology, they were specimens of the same species: two wheels in axis, the same function and even the same technology, that of the pedals, added by Michaux et Cie in 1861. Yet within a very short time, only one generation commercial, "penny-farthing" literally went extinct. The name of the first modern bicycle, safety bicycle, a clever marketing gimmick, explains why.

Previous examples of the bicycle species were not only inefficient, but also extremely dangerous. Accidents were a daily occupation of journalists of the time. The chronicles and city debates often dealt with it. In 1869, Count Giulio Belinzaghi, at the time mayor of Milan, prohibited its use within the circle of the Navigli. The "steel mounts", copyright of the newspapers of the time, frightened and injured pedestrians. We do not know if Charles Darwin (1809-1882) ever saw a bicycle live. But Darwin's bicycle exists: it is that of technological evolution. A contemporary of the Cambridge naturalist had also noticed this: Samuel Butler. Hidden under the pseudonym of Cellarius, Butler was the author of the article "Darwin among the machines", published in 1863 in the New Zealand newspaper The Press, only four years after the publication of "The origin of species "(1859). The passages, later developed for the anonymous book "Erewhon" (the same letters as Nowhere, nowhere), still appear disturbing today for the ability to anticipate debates, so much so that one should consider the reasoned re-edition: "We refer to the question : What kind of creature is likely to be man's next successor in Earth supremacy? We have often heard of it, but it seems to us that we are creating our successors ourselves, (...) we give them greater power every day and we provide with all sorts of ingenious devices that self-regulating and self-acting power which will be for them what the intellect was for the human race. In the course of the centuries we will find the inferior race ». Again in this text, Butler also anticipates the hypothesis that, thanks to the Darwinian process, machines can develop their own consciousness over time and reproduce themselves.

Butler's own history and reasoning actually implode in a violent Luddism, so much so that "Erewhon" is a world where all the machines of the "last 300 years" have been destroyed and the reflection on the need to block the singularity ante litteram, that is the overcoming the machine species on the human species, is discovered by the protagonist in an old book called "Book of the machines" (a book within a book, a classic writer's trick). Furthermore, according to some critics, Butler's work is a masked parody of the Victorian era and the faith placed in the industrial revolution. This does not detract from the author's happy intuition of using evolutionism as an interpretative key of technological development. From the abacus to supercomputers and the current results of machine learning, the temptation to rely on technological Darwinism is high. From smoke signals to the Internet, the suggestions appear endless. But if the application of this scheme appears fascinating in the case of artificial intelligence - where, however, there is the danger that the debate is more emotional than scientific - its effectiveness is clearer and less at risk of ideologisms precisely with the history of two wheels. The bicycle is an example of continuous adaptation and subspecies that die while others emerge, passing on their own "genetic" superiority.
Invented, as is well known, by Count Drais in 1817 (an example of brilliant "applied research"), the bike faced its first leap in species in 1861 with Pierre Michaux, a French blacksmith who had the intuition to add pedals. The old draisine, which still required a tiring and unprofitable use of the thrust of the legs as a direct driving force, thus set off towards rapid extinction, remaining only as a toy for children. The penny-farthing model caused the medium's first real boom. Until the arrival of the Rover model which, thanks to the chain transmission, no longer required a huge wheel to increase the distance traveled with each full revolution of the pedal. Another leap of the car came with the introduction of the brake. It seems that the Wright brothers invented the coaster pedal: Orville and Wilbur had opened a bicycle shop in Dayton, the Wright Cycle Company. And it's not without foundation to say that their engagement with bicycle mechanics also influenced the experiments on early flights. If we analyze the historical scheme of technological progress, what emerges, as a further point of contact with biology, is the proceeding by continuous slowdowns and accelerations (development of an idea, explosion of problems that limit its diffusion, non-linear introduction of solution thanks to "neural or innovation buttons", typically the multidisciplinary meeting of several technologies, as in the case of the pedals that already existed and which can also be found in the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Or as in the case, precisely , of the button that meets the buttonhole, becoming a perfect technology still today).

On the other hand, even the most recent studies by the American scientist Carl Woese on archaea and on the horizontal transmission of genes in the development of the biology of life - the same ones that question Darwin's vision of a "linear tree of evolution" - seem even more effective in describing technological development, made up of continuous hybridizations and overlapping: the motorcycle is nothing more than the coupling of the engine into the bicycle, as, coming to our days, bike sharing is the fusion between digital transformation, two wheels and telecommunications. Another example of adaptation, not the last. Mobility, genetics and telecommunications. We think we are the children of the twentieth century, but we are actually the children of the nineteenth century, that century in which with Drais, Darwin and Antonio Meucci, we left the horses to get on a bicycle, a gene and a telephone, without leaving them anymore. Incidentally, taking up Butler's reasoning, isn't it a form of "mechanical consciousness" that allows shared bicycles to signal to us, through applications, where they are and how far away they are from us? Maybe it's just us who are transferring our Darwinism to technology. But we cannot exclude that in this passage a kind of machine biology may take shape.
