Velosolex

As for man and his evolution, even the bicycle has been able to change in many models.

Among these is the e-bike or pedal-assisted bicycle (EPAC - Electric pedal assisted cycle, also known as an electric bike).

The e-bike we know is a bike to which human action is added to that of an engine. In the past it was common to use an internal combustion engine, while in recent years the engines are almost exclusively electric.

But do you know that there is an ancestor of the e-bike? It's called velosolex.

Produced since the 1940s, its success lasted until the early 1970s. Even today, however, there are enthusiasts who use it, indeed they also promote a competition that took place this year on 6 July in Switzerland, at Plateau de Diesse, in the canton of Bern.

In the first post-war years this means of transport was the latest technology cry: it was essentially (but on Amazon you can still buy different models today) a bicycle with a small engine on the handlebars. A "bicycle that travels alone", as the slogan said. His death, however, is not due to electric bikes, but instead to the spread in the 70s of the first Piaggio scooters, such as Ciao or Boxer.

In the 1950s and 1960s the Velosolex appeared in many films, led by Steve McQueen, Catherine Deneuve, but above all Brigitte Bardot, who made his first film appearance in 1952, riding one of these legendary vehicles.
The Velosolex was also known under the abbreviated name of Solex, it is categorized as a twin engine created by the French mechanical company Solex. Originally produced in six million copies from 1946 to 1988, its manufacture was resumed in Hungary from 1993 to 2003. Furthermore, since 1997, following a Sino-French joint venture, a production of Velosolex engines continues China, carried out by Jiangxi Hongdu Moped Company Limited.

Characteristics of this vehicle are its simplicity and robustness, the low fuel consumption of about 1.4 liters of normal petrol, oil-petrol mixture at 100 km, the reduced weight of 28 kg.

SICUREZZA

Some useful tips for traveling safely.
Not all cyclists pay attention to their safety.
Every year there are too many bike accidents with lots of deaths and injuries. An important assumption is that the bike meets the technical requirements and is kept in excellent condition. Although they are not subject to a mandatory periodic inspection, it is a good idea to check the general condition yourself. Pieces such as rims, tires, brakes and lighting should be examined periodically. As for the lights, the law is clear. Obligation to fit a white front and rear red lighting system, reflectors on the rims and on both sides of the pedals. The statistics speak for themselves. At dusk and at night the risk of accidents for cyclists is three times higher than during the day. Even at night with rain, snow or against the light, the risk multiplies by ten. Here then is that lighting is fundamental among the safety rules on bicycles

As for visibility, we said that the front and rear lights are mandatory. Additional lights can also be used, but they must not dazzle other road users. Arrows are also allowed. Always wear a helmet on both conventional and e-bikes. In choosing the most expensive helmets are not necessarily better than the cheap ones. Important that they fit well to the head and are comfortable. The straps in front and behind the ears and under the chin must always be well stretched. Old or damaged helmets should be replaced, even when the damage is not clearly visible. Helmets with integrated lighting are allowed and ensure greater visibility but cannot replace the lighting of the bike.
Clothing is also an important element, cyclists dressed in dark are recognizable at a distance of 25 meters. On the contrary those with light clothes or fluorescent colors at 40 m. The wearer of reflective elements is visible from 140 meters away. The protection of cyclists is also an important aspect in the development of new cars. Systems like Adaptive Speed Control (ACC) and Emergency Brake Assist (AEB) also recognize bikes. Vehicle front radars scan the road in front of the car and avoid accidents.
Since technology is sometimes not enough, we remind that cyclists must always use cycle paths and cycle lanes if available. At sunset, at night and in the tunnel, the bike must light a front white light and a red rear light. Additional lighting is permitted if other road users are not dazzled. Always wear a helmet even on e-bikes. It is important to remember that reflective clothing is already visible at a distance of 140 meters.
P.s. While you are on your bike PLEASE do not text with your mobile!

Gillardeau

The name Gillardeau says little in Italy. To get to know it you have to go to western France, between La Rochelle and Île d'Oléron, or be a great oyster connoisseur. Gérard Gillardeau founded the eponymous company that is still famous today in 1898 and was a fan of bicycles, as well as of agriculture.
This is also why the farmer Gillardeau has allied himself with Peugeot and, having a head office in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, proposes the rental of a foodbike to have a picnic by the sea, with family or friends , eating oysters, of course.
When the foodbike is in motion a table protects the worktop and the opening of the compartments for the objects, while from a stand it opens and acts as a bar counter for tastings. The worktop integrates three compartments for storing items and there is even a refrigerator that keeps oysters and drinks cool.
After the picnic, a basket allows you to store the empty shells of oysters.
Véronique Gillardeau, co-director of the company of the same name, said she wanted to offer customers an original concept, suitable for the island of Ré. "With the Peugeot designers, the idea of the foodbike emerged: our customers who rent it can taste the Gillardeau oysters on the structure that opens on the bike, enjoying the view. I called this foodbike "Le petit Gégé", in homage to a high-end foodbike designed by the Peugeot Design Lab ".
The design of the foodbike, which reflects the spirit of the itinerant sales points called "Marcelle", designed by the Peugeot Design Lab for Gillardeau in mid-2017, lasted three months. The transformation was carried out by GRUAU, in Le Mans.

Annie Londonderry

Tiene conferenze, fa dimostrazioni ciclistiche, concede interviste, vende spille promozionali e foto autografate.

Dunque arriva a Shanghai e poi a Nagasaki.

Salta nuovamente in sella e raggiunge Los Angeles. Attraversa California, Arizona e New Mexico.

Annie Londonderry was the first woman to go around the world riding a bike and became a global celebrity in Victorian times.

Her role seemed to be that of wife and mother but Annie also made herself an athlete, an entrepreneur and a globetrotter calling herself a "new woman, if this term means I can do everything a man can do."

Legend has it that everything starts in a pub where two gentlemen discuss Thomas Stevens' world tour by bicycle in 1887. They bet that no woman would be able to do it. More: no woman would be able, alone and with scarce means, to sustain the physical and mental effort to rely only on herself. Annie burns with rage and accepts the challenge even if on a bicycle there is never a climb. But the liver has, want to escape from a gray life too.
Two days before leaving he takes a few lessons to understand how to get on the saddle and pedal, he entrusts the children to the incredulous husband and leaves for his great adventure. Bicycles were becoming more and more popular in the America of the time even though the women in the saddle were strongly opposed on the grounds of social dignity but also of health.
So Annie's business is much more than the challenge of a 24-year-old girl who wants to prove herself to succeed. It is the feat of a woman struggling for the emancipation of all. At the end of the 800 bicycles, no less than the struggles for the right to vote, were revolutionizing the customs, allowing women an unexpected freedom of movement and a slow but decisive turning point in clothing. In 1896 the activist Susan B. Anthony came to say that the bicycle "had done more for the women's emancipation of women than anything else in the world".
However Annie is forced to start with the usual long skirt, corset and high-necked shirt, screwed blazer and straw hat on her head. Bring only a change of linen and a pistol with a mother-of-pearl handle. But his baggage contains a lot of determination and a great desire for freedom.
His popularity grows to the point that the newspapers, previously hostile, begin to follow her to get her interviews. What he is doing is so absurd and contrary to any social convention that arouses interest. And the newspapers of the time live on sensationalism.
Annie uses the popularity to finance herself. He gives lectures, makes cycling demonstrations, gives interviews, sells promotional pins and autographed photos.

His bicycle and his own person become advertising posters: he wears signs, ribbons and bands of all kinds advertising from bicycle tires to women's perfumes. Companies like newspapers contend and she says no to no one. Except for the marriage proposals, which flake. From Marseilles it embarks again. She only has 8 months to complete the journey. It seems a desperate undertaking but the bet does not specify how many kilometers the bike has to travel so every time it can take a ship to tackle long journeys. Someone talked about cheating. Someone else claimed that even the bet was just a publicity stunt.
Every time he sets foot on the ground, however, Annie pedaling.

Visit Alexandria, Jerusalem, Colombo, Singapore, Saigon, Hong Kong. It touches China, Korea and Russia, even if there is no confirmation of this part of the journey. So he arrives in Shanghai and then in Nagasaki. Whenever possible, he must go to the consulates to obtain proof of having reached certain stages. Dressing like a man helps her on many occasions, especially in those countries where a woman on a bicycle is more than strange, unacceptable.

On March 9th 1895, almost a year after the departure, he left Yokohama in Japan for San Francisco where he arrived on the 23rd of the same month. Jump back in the saddle and reach Los Angeles. It crosses California, Arizona and New Mexico. The journey continues in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa to return to Illinois and then to Massachusetts.
Despite several incidents along the way Annie goes on, even when she has a broken wrist or a train almost overwhelms her. And if she is forced to stop taking advantage of the stop to hold a crowded conference and keep alive the interest on her journey. It even involves the journalist Nellie Bly who a few years earlier has traveled the world in 72 days. He sends her letters from every stop and Nellie posts them on the New York World.

For some stretches take advantage of a ride on the train or ride along the tracks, especially in the driest areas of the Arizona desert or along the muddy roads of Nebraska. September 12th arrives in Chicago, 14 days before the deadline: the bet is won. But there is still to go home. He arrives in Boston on September 24th.

Often other cyclists recognize her on the street and follow her to accompany her for long stretches. He is now a celebrity. The newspapers define his company as "the most extraordinary journey ever made by a woman."

Although many stretches have been made on board a ship or a train, Annie has nevertheless cycled for 15,455 km out of a total of 41,841 km traveled. When she could not find a place to sleep for the night, she slept outdoors, in a barn, even in a cemetery. And if no one offered her a meal she would eat apples picked up along the way.

After the adventure, Annie returns to her family and her life. However, he has a new career as a journalist for the New York World that he has conquered in the field by telling his journey successfully. Sometimes even exaggerating or inventing from scratch. Like when she calls herself unmarried or talks about herself as an orphan or a rich heiress, a law or medical student. He even goes so far as to tell of tigers hunting in Bengal and bullets dodged in China. There is no way to verify that it really happened and most of the time in those countries it didn't even set foot by boat, but Annie needs to sell herself in the best way and use all the tools at her disposal to succeed.

He died in 1947, almost forgotten. Leaving his career as a journalist, he was in charge of a small textile company. To rediscover his incredible story is the great-grandson Peter Zheutlin who in 2007 recounts the events in the book Around the world by bicycle. The extraordinary adventure of a woman conquering freedom.

Philly Naked Bike Ride

About 3000 people took part on Saturday at the Philly Naked Bike Ride, a unique event held every year in Philadelphia.

It is a gathering of cyclists who, starting from a city park, cross the streets of the city naked and riding their bicycles, along a 10-mile route (about 16 kilometers).

The target?
Cycling naked in favor of body positivity, cyclist safety and fossil fuels.

The organizers explained that the ride, which touches on some of the most symbolic places in Philadelphia such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, was brought forward by one month compared to other years because many complained about low temperatures.

Addio grande campione

Cycling cries, sport cries.
Felice Gimondi died yesterday afternoon.
The world of sport woke up a little more lonely after the death of Felice Gimondi, the great cycling champion who died yesterday at the age of 76 following an illness that caught him while he was bathing in the waters of Giardini Naxos , in Sicily.
Even the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wanted to recall the figure of Gimondi expressing his condolences in a note and recalling the many successes that have given prestige to Italy in sport and its style of great value in sporting and human behavior ".
Strong uphill and time trial and fast enough in the sprint, in 14 years of professionalism he won three Giri d'Italia (1967, 1969 and 1976), a Tour de France (1965) and a Vuelta (1968).
He is among the magnificent seven to have won all the Great Tours together with Eddy Merckx (of whom he was rival), Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome.
