The bicycle is the most effective means for short journeys and not only, the most pleasant, the most accessible, the healthiest and is capable of bringing unexpected benefits to the economy.

The awareness of the "power of the pedals" is gaining ground more and more in contemporary society.

With this essay, Razemon disproves bicycle prejudices and launches a vibrant appeal to the "cycle transition".

In almost ten years of professionalism, Marco Pantani has won just over thirty races, a modest haul when compared to those of Coppi or Merckx, Moser or Cipollini. Yet the Pirate has conquered the history and the people of cycling as no one could do for some time. Because he was a climber who came from the sea. Because he took off on Mortirolo and Galibier but he fell into cocaine and depression. Because he was chasing love but ended up in whores. Because he was a lonely man.

Marco Pastonesi reconstructs Pantani's career by collecting the unpublished testimonies of those who attended him closely: his followers, sports managers, friends of piadinerie. A polyphony of unexpected voices that return the Romagna from which he has never separated, the mountains that have consecrated him to myth, the climbers of the past of which he was heir, and the weaknesses of man: doping, described here by a perspective that undermines the clichés on the phenomenon, and on drugs. "If Pantani was a soloist, and a loner," writes the author in the introduction, "this book is the chorus of Greek tragedies, it is the band that accompanies a coffin in the funeral of New Orleans, it is a hundred storytellers who tell the deeds of a warrior, a bandit, a pirate, and it is also a geographical map.

Here there is no judgment, there is no sentence, there is no verdict, there is no order of arrival or general classification. Everyone has their version of him. "

In few days RCS Sport will officially present the route of the Giro d'Italia 2021. The route has now been designed, given that the organizers have completed the usual inspections and are defining the final details before the presentation. As for the route, the only part already officially presented is the start in Piedmont, which will take place on Saturday 8 May with a nine-kilometer individual time trial in Turin.

The route will run almost entirely in the north and center, with very little south.

After the initial time trial in Turin, the pink race will remain in Piedmont for another two days, with a flat stage from Stupinigi to Novara and a more lively one from Biella to Canale. From Piedmont we will move on to Emilia-Romagna, which is also very involved in this edition of the Giro. The fourth stage, from Piacenza to Sestola, will offer a first test in the mountains, while in the following stage with arrival in Cattolica (ONLY 2 KM AWAY FROM US!!!) the fast wheels of the group should return to the scene.

The Giro should then descend from the Adriatic side, stopping in Ascoli and Termoli, and touching the southernmost point in Foggia.

In the central phase he will also pay homage to Alfredo Martini, on the centenary of his birth. After the restart from Siena, it is planned to move to Sesto Fiorentino, the town of the most successful national cycling coach, on the road that leads to Bagno di Romagna.

After the arrival in Verona, the arrival on Monte Zoncolan, scheduled for Saturday 22 May, is certain. However, we will go up from the less traveled side, that of Sutrio, faced only once by the Giro, in the 2003 edition with the success of Gilberto Simoni. After a very busy Friulian stage, arriving in Gorizia, a dolomitic hamlet with the Giau pass and the finish line in Cortina.

First an uphill arrival at Campo Felice is expected, then an individual time trial in Umbria, from Foligno to Perugia, and then a very suggestive and treacherous stage in Tuscany. In this last stage, with probable arrival in Montalcino, the dirt roads of Siena will be tackled, those dirt roads where in the 2010 edition Cadel Evans won a stage made heroic by bad weather.

Other climbs the following day with the arrival in Trentino at Sega di Ala.

The proposition of relatively new ascents is one of the most interesting themes of this Giro d’Italia 2021. After the stage from Rovereto to Bergamo it will in fact be the turn of the last two mountain hamlets, both on climbs to be discovered for great cycling. First we will return to Piedmont to climb to Alpe Mera, an ascent of almost 10 km at 9% average gradient. Then from Verbania we will face the last challenge in the mountains that will lead to Alpe Motta / Madesimo, in Val Chiavenna.

The conclusion will be Sunday 30 May in Milan with an individual time trial.

How does it happen that an introverted and somewhat counter-current child, who loves reading more than the PlayStation, awkward in playground games, becomes a man who manages to fulfill his grand dream of braving the ice and frost on his bike?

Omar Di Felice, the Italian athlete who most distinguished himself in ultracycling, tells us about it starting from the experience of his feat in 2018 (over 1300 km on the Arctic Highway), then proceeding back to the origins of his passion.
The path was not linear, as in that descent on foot down a slope of Val Badia, when he and his father were caught by a storm.
In fact, Omar passed from professional cycling before the love at first sight and the great turning point: meeting his 'Omar Zone', Di Felice discovered that attitude to go beyond that allows the hidden talent to blossom. In this book he shares this revelation with us, telling us his story of him, as in a captivating adventure novel.

Dall'Himalaya all’Everest

New venture for the Roman cyclist Omar Di Felice who will attempt to cross the Nepalese side by bike to end the adventure at Everest Base Camp (5364 m.a.s.l.).

The adventure began on Saturday 6 February with a long air trip. The official start, with pedal connected, is set for February 15th from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

Omar will proceed north-west through the cities of Pokhara and Jomsom, gateway to the Mustang region, considered among the driest and coldest on the Asian continent. Here will begin the long ascents through Himalayan passes over 4000 meters, with the apex being reached at the top of the Kora La Pass 4660 meters, as well as the border crossing with China.

The crossing will continue along the paths of the Annapurna circuit, one of the mythical peaks over 8000 meters. In this area Omar will have to tackle the highest passable pass in the world, Thorung La 5416 meters. Here the greatest difficulties will be the amount of snow, the impervious path and the possibility that the pass is impractical due to the critical climatic conditions.

After crossing the pass, the next focal point will be the arrival at the Base Camp of Tilicho Lake 4919 meters. The last part of the route will be the long ascent from Kathmandu to Lukla from which the infinite climb up to 5364 meters of Everest Base Camp will start

At the distance, over 1300 kilometers of crossing, there are also 40,000 meters of total altitude difference. Without forgetting all the difficulties related to pedaling alone, through cold environments. And the overcoming of some technical passages on very challenging paths and mountain sections. Omar will probably have to load the bike on his back to get through some steps.

Ampler Curt

Thanks to Covid-19 and state incentives, 2020 has awakened the love of Italians for the bicycle. And in 2021 that has just begun it will be the same, because moving in a safer and more environmentally friendly way will be one of the priorities imposed by the pandemic that we will not give up. Electric bicycles will become more and more common, although the Ampler Curt subject of this test will likely not be seen on every street. And it's a shame, for several reasons: first of all because it is really beautiful, with its essential but robust line. Then because it is built very well, and again for the online sales policy, which allows you to have it at home in two weeks.

Ampler is a young Estonian company, with three models of bicycles in its catalog, all electric: Curt is the most expensive, with 2890 euros in the list, followed by Stout and Stellar, both at 2490 euros. All Ampler bicycles are available in different sizes, to be chosen according to the height of the rider: the Curt from Small to Large, Stout Medium and Large, Stellar only Small and Medium. The saddle is easily adjustable, but we were unable to change the height of the handlebar.

The Curt arrives home in a huge cardboard box, and from the beginning you can appreciate the attention to detail of those who build it: for example the two tiny drops of grease on the hub of the pedals, the necessary to ensure smooth use. and without noise for years. A smaller box contains the stringent instructions and tools. There is obviously also a battery charger, similar to those that until a few years ago were used for laptops; it connects with a magnetic socket, so if you trip over the cable, it will automatically detach without dropping your bike. It takes two and a half hours to fully charge the Curt.

The front headlight is included, and lights up the right way, while for the rear lights there are LEDs in the tube under the saddle: an original and refined detail, but which risks going almost unnoticed if you adjust the height to a minimum. There are the fenders; instead there is no tripod and bell. The frame is 6061 aluminum, with great attention to welds, and in general the build quality is excellent. If something should break, Ampler bikes use standard components, such as Shimano M6000 brakes and rubber belt (but only in the single-speed version, the one with gearbox adopts a normal chain), and therefore are repairable in all professional bicycle shops.

The most surprising feature of the Curt is its lightness: it doesn't look like an electric bike in appearance, but neither in weight, which with its 13.5 kg for the single-speed version is among the lowest in its category. The advantage is that even carrying it on the shoulder for a few flights of stairs is not an impossible task. And in all likelihood it will be necessary to do so, since the built-in battery cannot be detached for charging. It is located in the down tube of the frame and allows you to travel 70km, according to the manufacturer. The figure is very variable, because the Curt is a pedal assisted bicycle, therefore the motor (which is in the rear wheel hub, just slightly larger than normal) only comes into operation in some cases. The idea is to provide help when needed: when starting from a stop, uphill or when you are in a hurry; engine intervention is limited by law to 25 km / h: you can go faster, but you have to pedal.

It starts via a multifunction button next to the charging port, with which you can also choose the type of assistance provided by the engine and turn the lights on or off. However, everything becomes easier with the app, which connects to the bike via bluetooth and in addition keeps track of data such as the distance and the percentage of charge left. We have seen other more complete and versatile applications, but Ampler's one has clear graphics and is simple to use, despite its limited functions.

In and out of traffic, the Curt drives great, is agile and fun, with its rigid frame, carbon fiber forks and well-distributed weights: the feeling of control is total, also thanks to the excellent disc brakes. Details like the foam grips and the well-molded saddle improve comfort, but with cobblestones or particularly rough roads, the roughness is felt. The tires are Continental Grand Prix 4-Season, suitable, as the name implies, in all weather conditions and resistant to punctures.

There are two driving assistance modes, normal and boost. The speed achieved is the same, but the boost setting provides up to 50 percent more cranking than normal. In everyday use, it is the one that guarantees the best performance, while the normal mode is perhaps a little too mild.
Curt employs a torque sensing motor control, which measures the amount of effort applied to the pedals to determine the thrust the motor should produce. The starting of the engine is almost imperceptible: apart from the minor effort, there is only a very slight hum. For Ampler, the effort must not be canceled, but only made easier to manage: what it takes to tackle a more demanding climb more easily, or to get to the office on time without sweating too much. And if you want, you can always burn some calories, just push on the pedals. The motor isn't super powerful, just 250W, but if the battery runs out, the Curt is light enough to ride like a normal bike, even in the single-speed version.

The Ampler Curt is only available in one color, a very hi-tech matte black. There are very few optional accessories: an anti-theft chain, an additional battery charger, an adapter for the towbar, and, perhaps most important of all, an annual insurance that covers all possible damage to the bicycle for 120 euros and provides for immediate replacement in case of theft. It's worth it, also because you get used to Curt easily, and other electric bicycles soon seem crude and ill-thought-out. The Ampler, on the other hand, is an unrivaled means of moving freely, in the empty streets of the lockdown as in the traffic that will return to flood the cities.
