London is planning to become the most bicycle-friendly city in the world

London is planning to become the most bicycle-friendly city in the world

London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the arrival of the Cycling Action Plan during the inauguration of a new cycle path in the northernmost part of the city.

The 5-year plan aims to triple the number of cycle paths and to introduce new quality standards for future infrastructures.

The new cycle development plan is not limited to promoting bicycle use but intends to achieve the objectives of Vision Zero (no more deaths caused by road accidents), develop new policies to promote pedestrian accessibility of places and more in general promote active mobility. All this following the general strategy promoted by the London mobility agency Transport for London.

The goal of TfL is to make London the best big cycle city in the world, to do so have allocated 2.3 billion pounds.

Within the Cycling Action Plan, 6 new criteria are indicated on how to build quality infrastructures:

  • speed of motor vehicles,
  • traffic volumes for motor vehicles,
  • accident risk at intersections,
  • width of the appropriate track
  • wide protection zones between parking lots and cycle paths
  • greater safety distances to avoid collisions with heavy vehicles
  • The need arises from the fact that often the standards are not enough to offer a product up to the expectations of the city, not by chance in the past TfL had already started to refuse consent to projects that were not of high quality.

Another new feature introduced by the plan is to rename the various existing routes, eliminating the current categories (Supercyclehighway, Quietway, Mini Holland etc.) in favor of the term "cycle", simpler and easier to guess, especially for the approaching public to the bicycle for the first time.

Sadiq Khan said he wanted to move from the current 63% of travel by public transport, bicycle and foot to reach 80% by 2041.

According to the mayor of London, having more people who choose to travel by bike is essential for the future of the city, both for the health of people and the environment.

Khan added: "The results are clear, where we have made quality cycle paths the number of cyclists has increased considerably. We aim to offer safe routes to all London citizens, from the center to the suburbs ".

According to Will Norman, London's bike manager, there is no more time to waste: "Climate change, poor air quality and an increase in the population living in the city are indicators of how it is necessary to change the mobility habits of Londoners. Cycling is the solution to these problems. "

Norman's main goal is to make the roads safer for those already pedaling and at the same time attracting new riders.

The bike manager also underlines a disturbing fact: 80% of London's children do not do physical activity, so in the plan for cycling there are plans to promote cycling within schools.

The greatest difficulty highlighted is that of being able to involve a greater number of people in changing their mobility habits. In conclusion, Norman argues that the innovations introduced by the plan will have the double effect of improving the London cycle experience and spreading good practices in the rest of Europe.
