With two liters of hydrogen, it manages to travel 100 km and to recharge it takes just two minutes.

Pragma Industries, the French start-up that produces fuel cells for military applications, has launched Alpha, the first series-developed hydrogen bicycle. The company, whose headquarters are in Biarritz, has recently sold 60 of these hi-tech bicycles to a number of French municipalities including Saint Lo, Cherbourg, Chambery and Bayonne.

The prices of the bikes that reach 25 km / h, still remain prohibited and reach 7,500 euros each, but Pragma Industries intends to quickly take them to 5 thousand euros, the equivalent of a high-end electric bike. For now the start-up is aimed at bicycle rental operators, delivery companies and public administrations wishing to acquire a fleet of ecological and efficient bikes.

Unlike electric bicycles that need several hours to recharge, the two-liter tank on the Alpha gets much faster and one kilo of hydrogen contains about 600 times more energy than a lithium battery of the same weight. The problem is that there are few recharge stations scattered throughout the territory. For this Pragma is developing a device to be applied on bikes, capable of transforming water into hydrogen using a chemical reaction between water and aluminum or magnesium powder to produce hydrogen gas.
