The project, approved by the Finnish national government and the local government of the city, is supported by funding of 23 million euros. This will make it possible to build the underground cycle / pedestrian viaduct and a bike park with at least 1,500 spaces.

The work will be of fundamental importance for those who travel by bicycle, allowing to avoid busy streets and the mingling with public transport hubs, such as buses, trams and taxis that have as their main stop the central railway station of Helsinki, a work monumental and not indifferent in size, which is crossed by 200,000 passengers every day.

Bicycles will be able to travel on a dedicated lane of 2 meters for each direction of travel, to which are then added about 3.5 meters for pedestrians.

The project was approved 2 years ago, but only today - at the beginning of 2021 - work began for its construction, an infrastructure long awaited by cyclists who will be able to use it starting from March 2023, when the works should be completed. A date not taken for granted given that the works will be particularly complex due to the fact that the city stands practically on the rock.

The new cycle and pedestrian tunnel of the city will give a strong boost to the projects of the administration that for years has been pushing for a more sustainable Helsinki where moving actively and sustainably is within everyone's reach, as also demonstrated by the important results achieved on the front. road safety of the most vulnerable road users.
