Buon compleanno Colnago!

Take a look to this interesting interview with Vittorio Colnago by Corriere della Sera

Ernesto Colnago, the most famous bicycle creator in the world, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Wednesday with a lecture at Bocconi, introduced by two genuine cyclists: Vittorio Colao, Minister for Innovation and Technology, and Romano Prodi.

What will Ernesto tell the students?

"Of the apprenticeship with the mechanic from Cambiago who fixed everything, from the bike to the tractor: my mother paid for it with two kilos of yellow flour a week. And when I told my father that the chief welder had singed my hand because, to defend myself against another boy worker, I had not kept my eyes fixed on the assembly line. He said to me: "Ernesto, in life always look straight ahead". I have never forgotten those words ».

Is it true that he founded the Colnago company out of hatred of the steady job?

“After three years in which I learned the basics of work but also to hate the assembly line, a bicycle accident forced me to stay at home for a month. I asked the owner to work from there: they brought me the wheels that I mounted and centered. I got to be paid in material: after the job I fixed the bikes of peasants, workers and some cyclists. From home I soon moved to a small shop ».

The turning points in his life?

"Two. The first when the great Fiorenzo Magni, with a sore knee, passed through Cambiago. He had badly aligned cranks and I took him to the workshop to fix them. He didn't want to go in first (“Magni doesn't go into a hovel like this,” he thundered) then he was convinced. The next day, the pain gone, he sent for me to take me to my first Giro d 'Italia as a mechanic. I was twenty years old ".

The second?

«My first bike for a champion, Gastone Nencini. White frame without lettering. The patron of the team, Chlorodont, a German, told me: “But at least write his name on it!”. Gastone won the Tour of Italy ".

You have transformed the shape of the frame and revolutionized the welding of the tubes.

"Until the 1950s, no one was able to build rigid bikes: the tubes were badly welded and the vibrations dispersed the energy of pedaling. I shortened the size of the frame and created the junctions to make them snappy. They were Merckx's bikes, the greatest of all ».

He was also the first to dare with carbon.

"With the help of Enzo Ferrari who agreed to receive me, he giant, me just a former mechanic who became a builder. Ferrari made the Maranello study center available to me, but above all his head: we examined my sketches together and he sensed problems and solutions on the fly. He was a visionary but above all a great engineer ».

The carbon was tested at the Paris-Roubaix in 1996. The brittle carbon on the cobblestones, what madness.

«Mapei also brought a set of aluminum bikes to Paris, for safety. Patron Giorgio Squinzi was terrified, I comforted but up to a certain point by calculations and laboratory tests. When I turned on the TV and saw three Mapei men in the lead, I understood that the era of carbon had begun ".

From here, from the window of his living room, you can see the company from which the bikes of all the champions of the last 50 years have come out. Now Colnago is no longer of him.

“I am 90 years old, I was left alone: I had to sell to the Arabs whose vision and projects I unfortunately do not know. I hope they understand that Colnago's success was the heart and soul that I and all the employees have always put on every bike. "
