Strada della morte: Bolivia in bici

La strada della morte si chiama in realtà Via degli Yungas e collega La Paz alla città di Coroico. 
Fu costruita negli Anni Trenta dai prigionieri paraguaiani portati in Bolivia durante la sanguinosa Guerra del Chaco, per collegare le profondità della Foresta amazzonica con la capitale più alta del mondo. 
Furono gli americani di passaggio a definirla “the most dangerous road”, stimando che ogni anno morissero tra le 200 e le 300 persone per incidenti anche solo casuali, dato che era percorsa da camion, automobili e viaggiatori abituali che oggi deviano sulla seconda via di accesso alla foresta amazzonica. 
La strada va dai 3650 metri s.l.m. di La Paz fino agli oltre 4500 metri del passo La Cumbre, per poi precipitare lentamente fino a Coroico. 
La strada degli Yungas è priva di ogni protezione e ad ogni curva presa male si rischia di cadere nei burroni: ciò ha reso la death road ancora più irresistibile.

Ci vorranno all’incirca quattro-cinque ore di pedalate attente per percorrerla tutta. La raccomandazione è una: allerta & prudenza. 
Fate estrema attenzione: un semplice sasso non visto può far saltare la bici e perdere il controllo, inoltre nonostante il traffico di veicoli sia quasi sparito, può capitare qualche macchina inattesa. Vi faranno male le gambe e le mani per la stretta ai freni, vi esploderà il mal di testa da sforzo ma sarete ripagati dai paesaggi incredibili della Bolivia: mentre i seimila metri dello Huayna Potosí veglieranno sulla vostra discesa, vedrete campi rigogliosi di foglie di coca in lontananza tra la nebbia, la placida presenza di buffi lama e alpaca, la bellezza scostante dei matos tra Bolivia e Brasile. 

The road of death is actually called road of Yungas and connects La Paz to the city of Coroico.
It was built in the Thirties by Paraguayan prisoners taken to Bolivia during the bloody Chaco War, to connect the depths of the Amazon Forest with the highest capital of the world.
It was the passing Americans who defined it as "the most dangerous road", estimating that 200 to 300 people died each year even for casual accidents, as they were driven by regular trucks, cars and regular travelers who are now diverting to the second access to the Amazon rainforest.
The road goes from 3650 meters s.l.m. of La Paz up to over 4500 meters of La Cumbre pass, then slowly falling to Coroico.
The Yungas road is devoid of any protection, and at every bend you take the risk of falling into the ravines, this has made the death road even more irresistible.

It will take about four to five hours of careful pedaling to go all the way. The recommendation is one: alert & prudence.

Be very careful: a simple unseen stone can blow up the bike and lose control, in spite of the vehicle traffic is almost gone, some unexpected cars may happen. It will hurt your legs and your hands to hold on to the brakes, it will explode your headache by effort but you will be rewarded by the incredible scenery of Bolivia: while the six thousand feet of Huayna Potosí will watch over your descent, you will see lush fields of coca leaves in the distance between the fog, the placid presence of blade knife and alpaca, the astonishing beauty of the matos between Bolivia and Brazil.
