Truong Van Dao

The transformation process took about a week of work (and who knows how many days of design), and involved a large number of changes to the original bicycle, starting with the change in the geometry of the frame. Refurbished the wheels, mounted the electric motor in the central position and the battery in the oblique, Van Dao proceeded to create - by hand - all the wooden coatings, until obtaining the impressive result that you can see in the pics above.
The final touch is the ignition switch next to the house emblem.

The e-bike made by Van Dao is obviously not in any way official or authorized by Lamborghini, but it is certainly cheaper than the electric bicycles made by the Italian company, which presented its first two models, Crosser and Sporter in 2018, exclusive as its supercars: prices start at 15 thousand euros, to which the customization of the Ad Personam program must be added - just like for cars.

It is not the first time that Truong Van Dao has tried his hand at the Sant’Agata Bolognese brand. Or with a car brand in general, for that matter. In fact, the Vietnamese artist runs a very popular YouTube channel where he creates very faithful miniature reproductions of supercars and more.

How many bicycle books have been written by women? I didn't bother to count, but, despite the new wave of volumes on the pink half of cycling, they are certainly less than those signed by men, which makes me particularly happy. From 20 May 2021 my I wanted the bicycle, published with Vallardi, is in bookstores. A book on the bicycle that I wrote entirely in Puglia, in the 2020 of the pandemic. Between the sea, the olive trees, the laurel and rosemary hedges and that smell of laundry sprinkled with salt that diffuses the mistral, the writing flowed smoothly and abundantly, fishing in the memory, drawing on the small diaries that, during my past exits on my bicycle, I had slipped into the back pockets of my cycling jerseys to take notes. On two wheels, around every bend, each time an unexpected spectacle opened up, a village, a forest, a story, an encounter. The portrait of a tiny, no lesser Italy, perceived with the privilege of slowness, gradually took shape on those pedal notes that I have fortunately kept.

I wanted the bicycle tells of my transformation into a bicycle blogger, to ring, with lightness and irony, stories, curiosities and cycling idiosyncrasies of men and women. I dedicated the most conspicuous part of the book to cycling itineraries that I actually traveled, mostly in Italy, from 30 to over 100 km long, each with a theme or soul, written with an eye to the narration of the territory, the more to my personal experience and the information necessary to be able to retrace the route.

According to a scientific study conducted by a US research team, aerobic activity such as cycling would increase our brain power.

The study found that during cycling, the blood flow in the brain would increase by 28% and up to 70% in some brain areas, but even after sports, in some areas of the brain it remains around 40. % even after exercise.

The increase in blood flow to the brain is a very positive factor because it could prevent a lot of brain diseases.

To get these benefits, you have to cycle for 45-60 minutes, four times a week.

When we move inside a fluid, be it a gas such as air or a liquid such as water, there is a resistant effect that opposes our motion. Try to think, for example, when you try to walk with your legs immersed in water. The same is also true when moving on dry land, however, the resistant effect in this case is less evident, at least at low speeds. In fact, the air resistance during a quiet walk in the open air is practically impossible to perceive. Conversely, the effect of the same during a rapid descent on a bicycle is far from negligible, which is why many professional cyclists actively choose to perfect their posture while pedaling.

To understand the importance of aerodynamic drag in cycling, just think that 70% to 90% of the power generated by a cyclist's legs is spent on counteracting aerodynamic drag! In this regard, the effectiveness of a correct aerodynamic position was also demonstrated - in a decidedly pragmatic way - by cyclist Michael Guerra, who was filmed on video in a position renamed "superman" which soon went viral on the internet.

Aerodynamic drag, better known by its English name of drag, is a force that acts on a moving body within a fluid. In reality, the same is also true if the body is stationary and the fluid is moving, but let's not complicate things too much since we are focusing on a specific application. As a force, drag tends to decelerate the cyclist and consequently increases the physical effort necessary to maintain constant speed or even increase it. This force arises from the interaction between the fluid and the body itself, in particular, traditionally two components of drag are identified: form drag and skin friction drag. As the terms suggest, the former is related to the shape of the moving body, while the latter is related to the viscosity of the fluid.

To understand the concept intuitively, imagine a thin plate immersed in a flow of air. When the plate is perpendicular to the flow, the air crashes on it, locally increasing the pressure and consequently generating a force that is mainly linked to the "extension of the plate", or to its frontal area. On the contrary, when the plate is parallel to the flow, the air tends to "drag" the plate by cutting.

From a more technical point of view, drag is quantified by means of an equation that might seem rather complicated at first glance, however, once the role of the individual terms is understood, the phenomenon "practically explains itself".

D = \ frac {1} {2} \ rho v ^ {2} C_ {d} A

In the drag equation ρ is the density of the fluid, V is the undisturbed speed of the fluid which in our specific case is that of the cyclist, Cd is the drag coefficient (in Italian drag coefficient) and lastly A is the area front of the body in motion. First of all, you immediately notice that drag increases with the square of speed and therefore its contribution becomes all the more important the faster you move. For this reason, if you are walking on a sunny and windless day you will not even notice that you are slowed down by the air that surrounds you, just as we mentioned at the beginning of the article. The second interesting thing to note is that drag increases as the density of the fluid increases. Therefore, considering that the density of air is about 1.2 kg / m3 and that of water is 1000 kg / m3, you understand why walking in water is much more tiring than on dry land!

In any case, for a cyclist the most important parameters are the drag coefficient and the frontal area, as these can be optimized by assuming a correct posture. By reducing the front area you can reduce the effect of the form drag, which is quite intuitive. Think for example of a sail: the larger the surface, the greater the force generated by the air on the boat. Less simple, however, is to understand the role of the drag coefficient. This term basically determines the efficiency of the aerodynamic shape of a body. Take for example two hemispheres with the same radius and therefore having the same frontal area, if the hemisphere is turned against the air that impacts it, the drag coefficient is reduced by 66%. To summarize in a simple way what happens in this case, one can think that a body is all the more aerodynamic the easier the path of the air around it is made.

An interesting study conducted by a team of researchers from Belgium and the Netherlands quantified the aerodynamic efficiency of some positions taken on a bicycle by professional cyclists during a hypothetical descent. The study was conducted through experimental tests in the wind tunnel and CFD simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics) on the computer.

The results show how the more squatting positions, i.e. those that tend to reduce the frontal area, guarantee better results. Furthermore, the positions in which the cyclist's body “fences” the seat seem to lead to more favorable aerodynamic conditions. This happens because the seat area is critical from an aerodynamic point of view. In fact, if the air flow is not "conveyed" gradually towards the saddle of the bike, a recirculation area is formed in which the air tends to remain "blocked" which then affects the aerodynamics. of the system.

Alfonsina, in bicicletta oltre i limiti

Alfonsina Strada's story is an epic one, full of fatigue, dreams, misery and above all conquests never celebrated enough. Simona Baldelli retraces and frames her in a sublime way in the biographical novel Alfonsina e la strada (Sellerio), a book in balance between truth and literary invention that goes to reconstruct and sew with love the salient moments of the existence of this extraordinary woman, pioneer of cycling and more.

Alfonsina's is a race towards emancipation that begins at the end of the nineteenth century and reaches its peak in 1924, the year in which "the runner" participates in the Giro d'Italia: without a team, without money, without valid technical means, only woman in a world to say the least macho. Alfonsina does not give up, she rides for more than three thousand six hundred kilometers along the peninsula, carrying out a grueling and unprecedented feat, taking home the greatest victory: social redemption. An important milestone for women of all times that has contributed to the equalization between male and female sport, which today we can look forward to with deeper admiration thanks to the work of Simona Baldelli.

Alfonsina Morini - this is her celibate surname - was born in 1891 in Castelfranco Emilia and spent her childhood in Fossamarcia, not far from Bologna. She is the second of ten siblings, she grows up among mosquitoes and hardship in a peasant family, until one night she secretly takes her father's bicycle and begins to pedal. She pedals and breathes. Through a gesture of disobedience, she begins her journey towards personal fulfillment that always proceeds on two wheels and uphill, among a thousand obstacles.

Little more than a child, she works in a tailor's shop, during her lunch break she trains and in her spare time she goes to see racing. She then begins to compete and her first successes arrive in Turin where in 1911 she sets the world speed record for women, reaching 37,192 kilometers per hour. In Paris, “the queen of the crank arm” - this is her nickname - conquers the public by performing in the velodromes. A few years later she asks to be admitted to important men's competitions: her most famous feats are the Giro di Lombardia (1917 and 1918) and then at the age of thirty-three the Giro d'Italia, an experience that will remain in history. After a happy moment, Alfonsina's fame fades and to earn a living she is forced to move to France to work in circuses. Subsequently she, with her second husband, she opens a bicycle shop in Milan where she dies in 1959.

The challenge carried out by Alfonsina does not only concern the limits imposed by the company but also her personal ones. The falls - physical and metaphorical - are continuous. The one that occurred during the eighth stage of the pink race remains emblematic in which she not only injures herself and finds herself on the ground with a broken handlebar which she luckily replaces with a broomstick.

"I am a sports 'sick person' - Simona Baldelli tells us - to call myself passionate is an understatement. Sport takes my head and body because I believe it is the continuous representation of the human being confronted with his physical and mental limits, often managing to overcome them ". Yet what struck the writer the most was Alfonsina's imaginative capacity: “She was born without any kind of horizon: a woman, poor, little more than illiterate, without recommendations or protections. Yet she was able to go beyond this perimeter drawn by bad luck, responding to a need I think more of the body than of the head.

Riding a bicycle, her whole body felt happy and she obeyed him ”. She then underlines: "It is very easy to cross a limit when you know what to look for beyond the horizon but this is not the case with Alfonsina Strada, because there was nothing in that swamp. She imagined that you could ride a bicycle, that you could compete, she learned foreign languages despite having only done two years of school, she became an international star, she invented a way to ride a bike and even a haircut before by Coco Chanel, the baby cut! Of course, as a woman it was all a thousand times more difficult but it would have been as well as a man. This is the aspect that most fascinates me about her and moves me ".

Alfonsina is courageous, strong and stubborn but through the novel written by Baldelli we enter the more sentimental side of her. We understand the loneliness and despair of a "simple" person who undertakes a great and very tiring path to happiness, hindered by an often adverse fate. We feel her joy when the love for Luigi Strada is ignited - the man who by marrying her gives her the hope of a better future as well as a "magical" surname that will forever mark her destiny - and we feel bitterness and anger seeing her bent by the life events, particularly when the husband ends up in an asylum.

Romano Bracalini accompanies the reader through the society of the Fascist period, supported by the careful reading of documents, testimonies and above all newspapers of the time. His story starts from how fascism changed the face of the country with an ambitious restructuring program: the reclamation of the Pontine marshes, the construction of roads, highways, railway stations, ports, airports, schools, hospitals, aqueducts.

Cities were enlarged and new urban centers enriched geography.
In Florence, entire popular districts were demolished, defined by the Duce as a "picturesque filth to be entrusted to His Majesty the pickaxe", like the district of Santa Croce, and Milan saw the internal ditch of the Naviglio disappear. The ambition of the regime to "bring order" and make Italy more efficient also had repercussions on social life, which was conditioned in all aspects, from the working dimension to the school and family, from the sexual, political-cultural sphere to that entertainment.
Thus associations flourished, after-work activities multiplied, the language was purged of foreign words, the most prolific women, mothers of the "soldiers of tomorrow" were rewarded, while those who did not procreate were considered a traitor to the homeland and did not work career, like unrepentant celibates, punished with the "celibacy tax".

Everesting

For some it is madness, for others a form of extreme sport, a challenge against oneself to go beyond the limits. It's called Everesting: cycling uphill after uphill until you reach 8,848 meters of ascent, the height of Mount Everest. You have to stay in the saddle for two days, stopping only to sleep, eating while pedaling, with your muscles inflamed, your body asking for help, your mind resisting, your heart booming.

Giacomo Pieri, known as Zico, from Marche, has already done it four times and now his story becomes a documentary made by Florentine videomakers Tommaso Maionchi and Matteo Gazzarri. Zico climbed Mount Petrano four times in a row, in the Umbria-Marche Apennines, in 113 hours, becoming the first cyclist in the world to complete a quadruple Everesting. He doesn't care about winning medals, but getting in touch with himself, in the depths of the soul.

Beyond Everesting, in following Zico and the people who gravitate around him, we discover that this way of cycling is not only aimed at sport, but is used for something more: a challenge that takes on the universal contours of a deeper research into human spirituality and the connections between mind, body, environment and nature. The filming of the documentary is over and a crowdfunding campaign has started for the editing, post-production and soundtrack part.

«The project is currently self-produced - explain Tommaso and Matteo -. About four weeks of audiovisual footage were made in 2019, containing the preparation and development of Giacomo Pieri's Everesting Unlimited project, including a series of interviews with doctors, physiotherapists and scholars involved in it. The subsequent stages of the project include: cataloging and editing the film; - sound and visual post-production; mastering, translations and subtitles; the distribution. These phases will be activated as a result of the economic resources gradually found. Currently the project has been accepted for a call from the Marche Region called “Views of Together” but the funds will be granted only if we manage to finish the film and present it within the first week of March ». Bike hunter

Daniel Marinello is a member of the «Bike hunters», the recovery team of stolen electric bicycles of the Dutch company Van Moof, one of the leaders in the international e-bike scene. Paying just under 350 euros, he is entitled to a three-year coverage against theft. The customer will only have to report the incident via the app or the website, and then file a complaint with the police, which is necessary to have legal coverage when the bike is found. The detection of geographical coordinates takes place through a chip integrated in the frame, synchronized with a tracking system LBS ("location based services") and a bluetooth, which allows the bike to send the position in real time. Once a copy of the complaint has been forwarded to VanMoof, the company contacts the bike hunters, who have two weeks to return the vehicle to its rightful owner. In total there are 25, distributed in various points of sale around the world: London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin, but also New York, San Francisco and Tokyo.

Daniel is in charge of the German team. After checking the map, studying the coordinates and synchronizing the detector, he sets off on the trail of a stolen bike.

“It's adrenaline. An almost imperceptible tingling at the base of the head. You start pedaling, and you realize that every time it is the same as the first ». Before starting the search, Daniel adjusts the seat height. Despite being a hunter of stolen bikes for almost five years, his eyes, under the incessant gusts of Berlin autumn, betray the impatience of a novice.

Ohga

According to ISTAT, about 2 billion people in the world travel by bike, but during the winter, especially due to bad weather, it is not possible to choose this means of transport every day. Thus, the Norwegian startup Frikar has found an ecological solution, to convince citizens not to travel by car even in winter and to reduce CO2 emissions and has created a cutting-edge vehicle, structured on four wheels, designed to be green and protect cyclists at the same time.

The strong point of this vehicle is in fact the roof, built in thermo-heated material, which prevents the driver from being exposed to rain and cold, but also offers extra protection in case of accidents. Again from the ISTAT data it emerges that every year there are about 1400 victims among cyclists, mainly due to the increase in electric bikes, which travel at high speeds. And just after suffering a bad accident with his bicycle, the director of the start up, Sørensen, realized that an innovative solution was needed.

You know the Flintstones car, where to operate it you had to run with your feet? Here, this vehicle works almost the same way. The movement produced by pedaling is not reflected on the bicycle chain, as in traditional ones, but provides the necessary power for 3 electric motors.

On flat stretches the maximum speed is 25 km / h, but downhill it also reaches 60 km / h and it is possible to activate the "driverless" mode, during which you move at an average speed of 6 km / h, the same as a pawn. This is also possible thanks to a battery that allows you to travel up to 80 km on a single charge. The entire bodywork is equipped with lights, directional arrows and reflectors, to be visible even at night.

Just like a car, this vehicle is equipped with a passenger seat and a luggage rack and if, when in motion, it is 2.3 meters long and 84 cm wide, it takes up much less space when stationary. it can be positioned vertically, so that it can be parked without difficulty in just one square meter. In addition to offering every comfort to be able to travel in total safety, this ecological bike is also equipped with a filter capable of cleaning the air from smog.

At the moment it is a prototype, but in 2023 it could go on sale at a cost of € 5,000. The goal of the startup is to make a zero-impact vehicle affordable for everyone, which makes the experience of driving in the city fun, safe and sustainable.
