Tornanti e altri incantesimi

The French call them Les 7 Majeurs: they are seven passes in the Maritime Alps, between Italy and France, made famous by the great enterprises of the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

Each exceeds two thousand meters - the exact point where the vegetation ends and the oxygen begins to thin out. A geographical boundary, but also a symbolic one: the one between what we believe we have under control and what is elusive and, for this very reason, more desirable.

If you manage to climb them all in just 48 hours, you become part of the Confrérie des 7 Majeurs, a monastic and esoteric order, halfway between a religious sect and a coven of Jedi knights.

To succeed, it takes training, courage and, above all, a certain predisposition of mind: to be, like Dante and Odysseus, Springsteen and Jovanotti, Nibali and Bartali, willing to get lost in order to find themselves.

Hairpin bends and other spells is the story of a journey by bicycle which is also a journey of initiation.

A constant rise (and descent).

Between body fatigue and wanderings of thought, marmots whistling and chamois jumping, the story of two friends grappling with an epic made of eyes, muscles and passion.

With the nose up.

Herbert Diess

"Pedalare è divertente, salutare e fa bene all’ambiente.

"Cycling is fun, healthy and good for the environment. In overcrowded urban centers, the car, including the zero-emission electric car, will only be accepted in the future if the bike has enough space in the mobility mix."

This was stated by the CEO of the Volkswagen group, Herbert Diess, on the occasion of the launch of a pilot project that grants 500 employees of the Wolfsburg complex the authorization to reach their work station on two wheels.

The curious endorsement of the bicycle by the number one of the German giant not only reflects a new sensitivity towards environmental issues and alternative mobility, but must be read in a broader context, which saw the recent elections deliver Germany to a later date. Merkel still not fully defined. In this fluid situation, however, one thing is certain: the Wolfsburg group needs politics as never before, so that the conditions are created to begin to return from the colossal investments put on the bench of the electric transition.

Sitting on the saddle of a two-wheeler can be very useful in conveying the message that industry and public institutions are working towards the same goals and in the same direction. Up to the paradox of clearing customs clearance for a means of transport potentially "competing" to four wheels. Moreover, Diess himself, in a recent conference at the Munich Motor Show, was very transparent in "confessing" the role played by the Volkswagen group in supporting and advising the European Commission in defining the objectives of the Green Deal. Which, if approved as formulated, will effectively put out heat engines by 2035.

Super 73 omaggia Porsche

SUPER73 is a brand born in 2016 that today works hard to blend together the history of the racing world and the mobility needs of today's young people; located in California and Amsterdam, the company is redefining the boundaries of the electric two-wheeler industry, thanks to sophisticated designs, responsible production techniques, involvement of the local community and continuous research to grow and expand.

SUPER73's continuous research in the field of design has led to the birth of a new bicycle model inspired by the Porsche of the 70s.

SUPER73's latest effort is inspired by the iconic Porsche 935 Kremer Racing from the 1970s, a car that has raced and won the most important endurance races in the world, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and that of Daytona. This car has remained in the memory of enthusiasts also thanks to the particular color: blue, purple, orange and yellow, a combination of colors that clearly stood out in the paddocks of the time.

To further embellish the design of its new electric bicycle, SUPER73 has decided to use BBS gold rims on which Apache Fattyslick tires have been installed, and a transmission chain of the same color. The necessary inspiration for the construction of the seat was taken from the interior of the car, lined in Alcantara with white stitching and logo embroidered on the back: Alcantara is a material famous for its resistance over time, therefore it lends itself well to realization of the saddle.

With this new electric bicycle, SUPER73 wants to pay homage to one of the car manufacturers that have given more to the world of high-speed racing; the price of this special edition has not been disclosed, while the entry level models available on the European website of SUPER73 start at € 1599, a figure with which you can buy a bike of the Z series, able to travel between 20 and 32 km with a single charge at a maximum speed of 25 km / h.

From Friday 29th to Sunday 31st October, the “Slow Cyclist Festival” returns to Ferrara, the fifth edition of the festival of “the beautiful people who pedal”, the festival for those who love to pedal without haste, enjoying the views, encounters, stories and beauties of the area.

On the program: the slowest ride in the world "5 km in 5 hours", the Hour Record "upside down", the Granfondo del Merendone, the Gran Galà del Ciclista Lento, the Pedal Cinema and the round table "Two chat on two wheels ".

There are those who choose bicycles for the pleasure of pedaling and moving smoothly, without chasing performance, watts and odometers. Those who enjoy two wheels without the anxiety of arriving first, those who experience the pleasure of the journey rather than the finish line, appreciating landscapes and curiosities encountered along the way ... this is the philosophy, together with the motto "Blessed are the last who know life enjoy ”which for five years has characterized the Ferrara event dedicated to cycling-slow, to celebrate those who use the roads and cycle paths to pedal slowly, without talent for sport, without times to be respected or records to be established.

But what will happen this year from 29 to 31 October, in the three days dedicated to two-wheeled lenses?
So says Guido Foddis, creator and patron of the event: "For the Slow Cyclist Festival it is not a return, we were among the few to be able to plan the 2020 edition as well, zigzagging among the many branches that the pandemic continues to leave on our path.
However, it is a return to “almost normality”, that is to say the pleasure of being together with bicycle champions and cyclists of all reams.
In our Festival the real protagonists are the cyclists excluded from long distances, from competitions, from competitive training.
We already have a 95-year-old member who we will pamper like a princess, because she best represents our mission: to put everyone on a pedal vehicle.
Around her, Olympic and Paralympic champions, protagonists of civil society, artists, journalists and writers who flocked from all parts of Italy to celebrate the capital of the Republic of Bicycles, or Ferrara. The novelty of this edition will be the opening to independent cinema, obviously linked to two wheels. We will screen unpublished works, short films and documentaries produced in this difficult pandemic year, to give new meanings to the bicycle.
We will also give space to the requests of young people, committed to achieving the cultural change that the climate crisis imposes.
Also from this point of view, the bicycle is one of the solutions judged to be the best from every point of view. We will put Sara Segantin, writer, mountaineer and activist of Fridays for Future, representatives of the Ministry of Ecological Transition (even if we preferred to call it "Ministry of the Environment") and Ispra around a table laden with Tender cake. Besides them, writers and musicians, too often regarded only as entertainers and not as thinkers. An aspect that really matters to us is the promotion of concrete actions of solidarity that start from a simple gesture: pedaling. In fact, Alessandra Cappellotto will come to visit us, not only was she the first Italian to wear the World Champion jersey. But that today you represent the union of professional cyclists and that, in this area, you worked night and day to evacuate nine national team athletes from Afghanistan otherwise destined for a horrible future. Alessandra will enrich us by telling us about the "better world" that she tries to create riding her bicycle.
Slow Cycling is not just a form of pride for those who have nothing to win.
It is medicine
which is useful for all those who are too busy running to realize they are standing still ”.

It is a useful piece of furniture for those who have to safeguard spaces and furnishings of the house: thanks to the opening on the side it allows you to get the exercise bike out when needed, and then hide it when you don't want to pedal

Different in materials, shapes and sizes, the web allows you to find any type of furniture, but until now there has probably never been an opportunity to buy one for the exercise bike.

To be kept at home, of course, in the living room, as the bicycle appears only when needed, to disappear when you don't feel like pedaling.

Made precisely to safeguard the interior spaces and furnishings in the face of the spread of 'home gyms', so as to avoid rowing machines and other equipment placed in the living room, Boîtier is a cherry wood wardrobe with brass furnishings designed by the company of the same name with based in New Orleans.

Equipped with a sliding drawer on the side (if positioned on the right or left the buyer chooses it) to slide out and then hide the exercise bike, it can accommodate a long list of models and has a shelf at the top to store weights, shoes, ropes, the yoga mat and other items that you use to train.

It seems that a Taiwanese gentleman has equipped a bicycle with a jet engine derived from model aircraft, also attracting the ire of the local police after having tested its speed skills.

The result is disconcerting!

Seriously, it seems that the bike has exceeded 130 km / h but also that the Taiwanese police have had the fear of imitators able to jeopardize their own and others' safety and, for this reason, has intervened decisively.

Who would dare to get on a bike like this ???

36 pollici

In realtà c'era già chi ci stava lavorando seriamente...

Cycling will never be the same again!

In 2016 Focus presented, as a publicity stunt, on April 1st its Big Bird: a 36-inch Raven.

In reality there were already those who were working on it seriously ...

Thus was born the 36-inch project.

The bike was initially designed with an aluminum frame and a semi-road set-up, designed for long distances and presented in Verona in 2019.

In 2021 the brand new MTB with carbon frame was proposed.

A larger wheel diameter increases the gyroscopic effect produced by the rotation of the wheel itself, allowing the bike to proceed with greater stability and a greater sense of safety.

On a 36, taking your hands off the handlebar even at reduced speed, you immediately perceive this effect.

With a coverage of 36 × 2.25 ″ you have a large volume of air, working at a pressure of about 1.1 / 1.5 atm you already get a good cushioning effect from the cover, useful for overcoming the obstacles of a normal path.

36 ″ wheel angle of attack.

They made use of this term with reference to the 4 × 4 automotive sector ...

a 36er really “attacks” the terrain and obstacles.

There is no better term to explain how compared to a 29er with this bike you literally float on holes, stones and roots.

A ruota libera.

After a year of forced suspension BikeUP is back.

It starts today, Friday 22, with the cutting of the ribbon and ends on Sunday 24. The setting is always that of Bergamo, which hosts the 7th edition of one of the most important eBike festivals in Italy in a splendid location. In addition to the passion for two-wheeled pedals, this year the organizers have also thought about a safe use of all the exhibition spaces and test areas. The stands are large to maintain safety distances and all test bikes will be sanitized after each use.

The exhibition area has practically doubled this year and will occupy Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the Sentierone. The major brands in the sector will be present and present the 2022 novelties. In addition to the manufacturers there will also be many accessories and clothing companies. In practice, anyone who is thinking or evaluating the purchase of an eBike will be able to get a precise idea, ask for information and prices and obviously try all the bikes he wants.

As usual, BikeUp is the opportunity to get on the bikes of your dreams. This year, in addition to the tried and tested tours, mini tours will also be organized with racing eBikes accompanied by the exceptional guide Alessandro Vanotti, former teammate of Vincenzo Nibali, to try out the new eRoads in depth. There will also be many activities for children: balance bikes, children's bikes where specialized staff will welcome the little ones with educational and fun activities. And an area dedicated exclusively to Cargo bikes will also be set up, the frontier of urban mobility that is also beginning to take hold and arouse great interest in Italy.

The real news of 2021 is that some brands of electric scooters will also appear at BikeUp. Among others, Seat will present its new Mó 125 and NIU will offer its entire range.

"After last year's cancellation - declared the co-founder of Bike Up, Stefano Forbici -, we are very happy to be able to announce that the VII edition of BikeUP will take place in Bergamo. The Bergamo area is historically linked to the world of bicycles and the city is particularly concerned with the theme of sustainable mobility, which finds the ideal vehicle in the bicycle. In 2019, the synergy with the Municipal Administration was invaluable, thanks to the sharing of values and objectives; respect for the environment, as a vital resource for everyone; on the creation of virtuous projects involving the manufacturers of bikes and accessories. Without forgetting, of course, the involvement in total safety of the public, which we wish to entertain, inspire, encourage you to use a free, ecological vehicle that is intimately connected to the discovery of the territory which is the bicycle. "

All activities, including guided tours and excursions, can be easily booked through the website www.bikeup.eu choosing from the numerous opportunities offered by the program.

Dall'Adriatico all'Atlantico in bicicletta

Ogni tappa è stata documentata dall’immancabile selfie.

The president of Montevito Ciclismo Marino Gasperoni and Stefano Sertori from Rimini, protagonists of a bicycle venture: the two made the crossing from the Adriatic to the Atlantic on their own two wheels.

They left the port of Rimini at 3pm on Tuesday 7 September and arrived in Finisterre (Spain) on Thursday 16 September at 12.

A journey of 2,200 km, crossing the Alps and the Pyrenees, along the way to Santiago de Compostela, passing through famous places such as Mont Ventoux.

Going to work by bicycle is an increasingly widespread habit and companies themselves try to promote it. Precisely to reward those who are most committed to sustainable internal mobility, the Fiab certification "Bike Friendly Company" (Cycle Friendly Employer) makes its debut in Italy.

The first was delivered to Sacbo-Società for the Bergamo Orio al Serio Civil Airport.

The Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation is a member of the consortium, coordinated by the Europen Cyclist Federation, which created the first and only voluntary standard of the Old Continent for “bike friendly” companies. It is based on a protocol now applied in 16 European countries, which provides for homogeneous evaluation methods for functional areas:

  • information
  • communication
  • employee movement
  • coordination and organization
  • structures and services to support cycling
  • parking management as a complementary measure
  • influx of customers

At the end of the audit, a certificate valid for three years is issued; then there is the obligation to report annually the company activities and the opportunity to ask for a revaluation if the cycling project is innovated.

In this way, the realities that stand out for having created a work environment favorable to the use of two wheels are officially recognized. Among the various measures and policies considered, there are two essential requirements to access the path:

  • the appointment of the "mobility / bike manager"
  • the possibility to access and park bicycles in the premises.

There are three increasing levels of merit: bronze, silver and gold. The blue emblem is dedicated to companies with fewer than ten employees.

Anyone interested can find all the information on the Fiab website.

Alfonsina was the first and only woman to run the Giro d'Italia in 1924, and is considered a pioneer in gender equality in sports. Ever since Linda and Silvia came across her story, Alfonsina has become their muse and guided all their travels, spurring them on with her example of a stubborn and free woman, showing them the way, it is appropriate to say it. .

The 3,700 km pedaled in Italy are dedicated to her and to all the women that Cyclists have met by chance. Some were simple women who lived their lives in silence, almost in the shadows, others, like the partisan Angela, or Annalisa Durante, a victim of the Camorra, women who entered history head on. All of them, however, are the example and the embodiment of Alfonsina's idea of going straight to pursue her passions, without betraying the deep desires that animate us.

It is arriving soon the first e-bike with the stabilizer that will make falls from two wheels only a distant memory. A system that works a bit like the Esp, the electronic stability control that revolutionized car safety, but adapted to pedal assisted bicycles thanks to the collaboration between the German brand Gazelle and the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands. .

The rapid spread of e-bikes, which are much heavier and faster than traditional bicycles, has led to an increase in accidents and falls by cyclists, especially in the over 55 segment, even in countries that have evolved from the point of view of mobility safety. on two wheels like those of Northern Europe.

For this reason Gazelle, one of the leading brands on the German market, in partnership with Delft researchers, has been working on a fall protection system since 2016.

In 2019 the university presented the first prototype of a bike equipped with the intelligent handlebar assistance system which, thanks to counter-steering, is able to stabilize the two-wheeler in the event of loss of balance or distraction, starting from a speed of more than 4 km. so.

It is the first system in the world able to keep the bicycle in a vertical position thanks to a series of sensors arranged along the frame, which check the 25 physical parameters responsible for falls and when they notice the loss of stability of the bike, they transmit the information. to a chip that processes the information, identifies the type of fall that is occurring and activates the response of an engine, placed in a cylinder under the handlebar, capable of calibrating a correct counter-steering that allows the bicycle to get back on line. The system already worked well two years ago, when it was presented at the Dutch polytechnic but showed two major limitations.

The cylinder with the stabilizer placed under the handlebar was aesthetically bulky and was very expensive for the large numbers market but above all it needed to gain experience on the road to gather more information on the different types of falls. Information that is now transformed into algorithms that will allow the processor to give more and more precise commands to the stability motor, to calibrate the best possible anti-fall response.

In the meantime, the miniaturization of the cylinder is underway which, according to the latest leaked rumors, should be completely integrated into the upper part of the fork, in a new prototype, probably the final one, which should see the light entering the end of the year.

Bike lane

The Municipality of Bologna will receive 1.8 million euros, funds that the Region allocates to the world of two wheels: most of them will be used to create cycle paths and road maintenance, while 300 thousand euros will finance the Bike to work, that is the economic incentive for those who choose to leave the car in the garage and go to the office by bike.

It is thanks to resources like this that the city is slowly changing its face: in the post-lockdown months, Bologna has begun to fill up with cycle citizens, on the basis of the Relaunch decree, wanted to offer a green alternative to private and public vehicular traffic subject to passenger capacity limitations.

The bike lanes are "soft" and cheap cycle paths; made "with a white line on the ground": unlike the cycle paths they are not drawn independently, there is no physical separation from the roadway where cars and buses whiz by, but rather, they redistribute the space by carving out a whole strip of asphalt for itself.

To date, the cycle paths remain the most present infrastructure for two wheels, but the bike lanes are starting to be very numerous.
