In Inghilterra i ciclisti potrebbero presto essere soggetti alle stesse regole degli automobilisti in seguito ad una serie di proposte di legge, in attesa di approvazione nel Regno Unito.
Infatti, secondo quanto riferito dai media del paese potrebbero addirittura arrivare a dover circolare con una targa e l’assicurazione, per non parlare dei limiti di velocità che dovranno rispettare, esattamente come le auto. Il cambiamento è stato fortemente richiesto da alcuni funzionari governativi dopo che nel paese è letteralmente esploso il fenomeno del ciclismo.
Le nuove leggi potrebbero, inoltre, prevedere il ritiro dei punti dalla patente in caso di infrazione e multe salate per aver superato i limiti di velocità o essere passati con il semaforo rosso. L’assicurazione, potrebbe servire nel caso in cui i ciclisti più spericolati investano o feriscano i pedoni. Le vittime potrebbero, in questo modo, chiedere almeno un risarcimento. Le nuove proposte di legge fanno riferimento anche a delle penalità per chi viene sorpreso in sella ad una bicicletta in stato di ebrezza.
Il segretario ai trasporti inglese Grant Shapps ha spiegato che il cambiamento delle regole mira a porre fine a una scappatoia legale “arcaica” che attualmente prevede che i ciclisti possano rimanere in carcere per un massimo di due anni, anche dopo aver ucciso un pedone. Scrivendo sul Daily Mail, Shapps ha detto: “propongo assolutamente di estendere le restrizioni dei limiti di velocità anche ai ciclisti. Questo deve avvenire in particolare sulle strade dove il limite massimo è di 20 chilometri orari”.
“Non voglio impedire alle persone di andare in bicicletta, è un modo fantastico di muoversi. Abbiamo assistito ad un vero e proprio boom del ciclismo durante il Covid. Da allora, penso che questo abbia avuto diversi benefici in termini di salute. Ma non vedo alcun motivo per il quale i ciclisti devono infrangere le leggi stradali, devono accelerare, devono passare con il rosso e farla sempre e comunque franca”, ha concluso.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Shapps said: “I definitely propose to extend the speed limit restrictions to cyclists as well. This must happen in particular on roads where the maximum limit is 20 kilometers per hour ”.
“I don't want to stop people from cycling, it's a great way to get around. We have seen a real boom in cycling during Covid. Since then, I think this has had several health benefits. But I don't see any reason why cyclists have to break the road laws, they have to accelerate, they have to go red and always get away with it, ”he concluded.
