In fuga. Il mio romanzo con gli eroi della bici

 Una figura solitaria spunta dalla nebbia, mentre tutto intorno infuria una tormenta di neve. Sfreccia via veloce, e un attimo dopo la nebbia torna a inghiottirla. Appena alle sue spalle, ecco un gruppo di inseguitori. Sono fradici, semiassiderati, eppure vanno avanti, i muscoli tesi fin quasi a scoppiare, i volti contratti per l'enorme fatica. Ai lati della strada, le persone infagottate nei loro pesanti cappotti esplodono in un grido unanime di incitamento... 

Se esiste uno sport omerico, è senza dubbio il ciclismo: nessun'altra disciplina sa essere altrettanto epica e feroce, tragica e bella. È una magia fatta di passione e sacrificio, di gioia e dolore, di rabbia e amicizia: emozioni impossibili da illustrare con un'equazione. Per comprenderlo, lo devi raccontare: le battaglie più celebri e i duelli più agguerriti, ma anche i risvolti nascosti e gli inganni.

 Come ogni epica che si rispetti, anche il ciclismo ha i suoi eroi e i suoi antieroi, i suoi giovani valorosi caduti troppo presto, i suoi campioni colpiti dall'invidia degli dèi. Mario Cipollini, Fabio Casartelli, Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani... Sono molti i protagonisti che hanno inciso il loro nome nella leggenda di questo sport. E hanno storie formidabili, buffe, dannate e commoventi da raccontare. Serviva solo un testimone privilegiato, uno che le ha viste e vissute in prima linea, come gli antichi bardi che seguivano i guerrieri sui campi di battaglia e ne immortalavano le gesta.

If there is a Homeric sport, it is undoubtedly cycling: no other discipline can be as epic and ferocious, tragic and beautiful. It is a magic made of passion and sacrifice, of joy and pain, of anger and friendship: emotions impossible to illustrate with an equation. To understand it, you have to tell it: the most famous battles and the fiercest duels, but also the hidden implications and deceptions. Like any self-respecting epic, cycling also has its heroes and its anti-heroes, its valiant young men who fell too soon, its champions struck by the envy of the gods. Mario Cipollini, Fabio Casartelli, Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani... 

There are many protagonists who have engraved their names in the legend of this sport. And they have formidable, funny, damning and moving stories to tell. All that was needed was a privileged witness, one who saw and experienced them on the front line, like the ancient bards who followed the warriors on the battlefields and immortalized their exploits.
