Il sesto settore di sterrato della corsa porterà il nome di Fabian Cancellara per sempre. Era questo uno dei “premi” in palio se avesse vinto la gara per la terza volta. In dieci edizioni della sola “Classica del Nord più a Sud d’Europa”, è l’unico corridore ad averlo mai fatto – una volta ogni quattro anni: 2008, 2012, 2016. Nella prima parte della sua ultima stagione, l’atleta svizzero ha vinto l’oramai celeberrima corsa Toscana altrettante volte quante il Giro delle Fiandre e la Parigi-Roubaix.

Nella prova femminile, la Campionessa del Mondo Elizabeth Armitstead ha aperto un nuovo capitolo nella storia vincendo la prima prova di sempre dell’UCI Women’s WorldTour un anno dopo aver finito seconda in Piazza del Campo a Siena.

La corsa vinta da Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) ha confermato la buona condizione di Grega Bole, nel gruppo dei migliori sino alla bagarre finale, chiude 23°, il miglior piazzamento tra i team Professional in gara. In luce anche Riccardo Stacchiotti protagonista nella prima fuga di giornata di otto corridori rimasti a lungo al comando.

The sixth sector of dirt road (“sterrato”) of the Strade Bianche-Named will now carry the name of Fabian Cancellara forever after the Swiss star won the race for the third time. In 10 editions of the ‘Northern’ classic contested in the south, he’s the only rider to have done so, winning every four years: 2008, 2012 and 2016. As the Swiss rider competes in his retirement season, he has now won the iconic Tuscan event just as many times as the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. In the women’s event, world champion Lizzie Armitstead wrote a new chapter in the history of this great race, winning the first-ever women’s World Tour event, one year after she finished second on the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

“The operation, the hard training and ready to come back very soon. These are my plans because I’m really motivated to come back soon”. These are the first words of Damiano Cunego, on the team bus just after the race.

The race won by Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) have confirmed the good condition of Grega Bole, in the best group of the race until the final battle, he closed on the 23° place, the best placement among Professional teams in race.
