Bici e brutta stagione

Short days, rain, snow and bitter cold are certainly not allies of the cyclists. The winter season is usually complicated for those who go by bike but, with the right equipment, appropriate clothing and some rules to be respected, it can also be an opportunity for pleasant excursions.

Before setting out on a bike in winter and planning an excursion it is essential, first of all, to pay the utmost attention to the weather conditions and the state of the terrain and asphalt. In fact, when it is cold and you are cycling, it is necessary to stay dry and warm. The feet and the extremities in general are the first to cool down: care must be taken to keep them warm for the duration of the excursion, to prevent them from losing sensitivity and causing pain and making it difficult or impossible to continue riding safely.

To adequately protect feet and hands from cold and rain it is necessary to have shoes, socks and gloves suitable for winter weather conditions. The shoes must be made of water-repellent material, with a breathable inner upper that keeps the foot warm and prevents the cold from penetrating inside.

Very important are the stockings: to avoid circulation problems due to low temperatures there are models that compress some points of the foot and ankle, to help the blood circulation and avoid the loss of sensitivity.

Even hands and fingers need protection: you need to choose gloves with a warm and breathable inner lining and a windproof and water-repellent outer fabric.

Also the head must be adequately protected: however banning the woolen hats that immediately become damp and worsen the situation, windproof and rainproof models with a warm coating inside should be chosen. As for the rest of the body, the advice is to use warm, elastic and breathable garments like leggings with long legs or a complete thermal underwear and a warm but very breathable windproof jacket.

As with automobiles, bikes should also be fitted with winter tires: they offer greater grip on the ground and on asphalt made slippery by rain and humidity and significantly improve stability.

Bicycle lights, in winter, require even more attention: with shorter days and therefore few hours of light, they become essential for safety, to be seen by other cyclists and motorists.

An additional lamp on the vehicle, or one to wear on the head can help.

Another good idea could be to mount mudguards and protect the frame with products against water and mud, while still trying to pay close attention and not go out on a bike if the weather conditions are prohibitive.
