The figurines are born in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the competition pushes the consumer products to invent ways to make themselves known to retain consumers. More or less at the same time, the bicycle is becoming a vehicle of mass transport, as an icon of modernity that pushes the world towards the new era of industrialization.

It seems almost natural that the two roads were destined to intersect: the first advertising tools, in the name of a first push towards corporate social responsibility, discovered the bicycle as a vehicle that points straight to the future and offers democracy.

«The freedom of pedaling, running, traveling, trespassing, overcoming and overcoming, because in the saddle you are never alone, there is always someone to confront and accompany each other. And then also the freedom to dream, fantasize, invent ", explains Marco Pastonesi, sports journalist who has always loved the bicycle, who curated the exhibition" Bici davvero! "With Francesca Fontana! Velocipedi, figurines and other stories "going on in Modena at the Figurine Museum (until April 13th 2020): an original journey through the two centuries of bicycle history told through 350 pieces including albums and figurines, but also barber calendars, magazines .

Including razor blades that this time see Gino Bartali - the cyclist "born not to lose who didn't know how to lose" - beat Fausto Coppi, "born to win, but who didn't know how to win: he doesn't raise his arms to the sky, he hardly smiles, he has the look of a dying deer ", underlines Pastonesi.

From the section that shows the illustrations to teach how to ride a bicycle, the new means of locomotion that distorts transport, to postcards, stamps and images, from the first stickers to the part dedicated to safety in the face of the first bikes in circulation - "Warning, cyclists around "- that remains a very timely warning in front of the silent massacre that sees in Italy almost a cyclist dying on the roads every day.

From the icons of clothing, which sees women's clothing undergo the greatest transformations in concert with the emancipation that the two wheels pull the sprint up to prize competitions combined with products, where the bicycle almost never fails among the prizes. To finish with the figurines of the great champions and the followers, the most human and "proletarian" part of cycling, figures that in the post-war period give back to Italy the enthusiasm and the desire to dream (and to win), with a section entirely dedicated in Coppi, of which in 2019 the centenary of the birth occurs and in 2020 the sixtieth of death.

There is teaching, there is the race, the newspapers that flutter, the water bottles, there is a means that makes you have fun and travel, overcoming your limits: a true act of love that makes you understand what it was the bicycle in its history. And the great value that still today projects the two wheels towards the future.
