Nacque nel 1935 e a inventarlo fu il ciclista italiano Tullio Campagnolo, dal quale ancora oggi prende il nome una tipologia di cambio.
Attivo ad alti livelli tra il 1927 e il 1930, l’ingegnoso atleta studiò a lungo una soluzione per alleviare le sue fatiche in salita.
Dopo anni di esperimenti e scalate del diffcoltoso Passo Croce d’Aune, in provincia di Belluno, egli creò nel 1930 il primo brevetto di una lunga serie, ossia il “mozzo a sgancio rapido” per mezzo del quale poteva smontare in tempi brevi la ruota posteriore – al tempo dotata di un pignone (ruota dentata) per lato – e invertirla.
Dopo qualche anno, Campagnolo inventò infine l’antenato dei moderni cambi, con due pignoni montati sullo stesso lato della ruota e collegati a una lunga levetta azionabile anche in corsa, in modo che i corridori potessero spostare la catena dall’una all’altra ruota dentata a seconda delle necessità che i vari percorsi richiedevano di volta in volta.

After years of experiments and climbs of the difficult Passo Croce d'Aune, in the province of Belluno, he created in 1930 the first patent of a long series, namely the "quick release hub" by which he could quickly remove the wheel rear - at the time equipped with a pinion (toothed wheel) on each side - and invert it.
After a few years, Campagnolo finally invented the ancestor of modern gearboxes, with two sprockets mounted on the same side of the wheel and connected to a long lever that can be operated even in the race, so that the riders could move the chain from one wheel to the other toothed according to the needs that the various paths required from time to time.
