Janus River

L’ultima volta che ha dormito in un letto vero e proprio è stato il 30 dicembre del 1999. 
Partì tutt’a un tratto, all’insaputa di tutti. Dal 2000 gira il mondo in bicicletta, macinando sulla sua due ruote vintage migliaia di chilometri.

Ha visitato fin qui quasi duecento nazioni, incontrato decine di migliaia di persone. Dorme in sacco a pelo, senza tenda, all’aperto o da chi gli offre ospitalità lì per lì. In tasca non ha mai più di tre euro. Negli ultimi anni ha attraversato in lungo e in largo la Russia, l’Australia, il Sud America;  intende arrivare a Pechino nel 2028. In bici, ca va sans dire. Vuole morire libero come ha sempre vissuto. Il più tardi possibile: gli dà manforte il vaticinio di un monaco buddista della Cambogia, che gli disse «Vivrai fino a cent’anni». Vent’anni ancora in sella, qua e là, per il globo.

Nato in Siberia da padre polacco e madre russa, Janus River ha 83 anni, ma non li dimostra affatto. Il cicloviaggiatore più celebre al mondo parla varie lingue e ha fama di Casanova. Ovunque l’hanno accolto legioni di curiosi, gitanti, imprenditori e rappresentanti degli enti locali. A Ortona, per esempio, il sindaco gli ha conferito la medaglia di cittadino onorario ed è stato ospite di un bell’agriturismo locale, l’Antico Feudo. 

A causa dell’opprimente regime comunista è fuggito dalla Polonia che avevo 28 anni. Prima è stato in Egitto, per un periodo non lunghissimo. Poi, per tanti anni, in Italia, dove ha lavorato come manager nel mondo del calcio e dello spettacolo. Alla vigilia del capodanno del 2000 ha deciso di iniziare a girare il globo in bicicletta. Con sè non porta praticamente nulla. È più importante la filosofia alla base di quello che fà. Alle volte chiede ospitalità perché, alla fine del viaggio, donerà tutti i suoi risparmi ai bambini orfani russi. Sono oltre 50 mila: spera di riuscire a devolvere cinque euro a ogni bimbo».
Ha scelto la bici perché è sinonimo di libertà. "Su una due ruote si può andare dappertutto: spesso è ardua, ma dopo ogni salita c’è una discesa".

As late as possible: he is supported by the prophecy of a Buddhist monk from Cambodia, who said to him "You will live up to a hundred years". Twenty years still in the saddle, here and there, across the globe.

Born in Siberia to a Polish father and Russian mother, Janus River is 83 years old, but does not prove them at all. The most famous cycle traveler in the world speaks several languages ​​and has a reputation as Casanova. Legions of onlookers, excursionists, entrepreneurs and representatives of local authorities have welcomed him everywhere. In Ortona, for example, the mayor awarded him the honorary citizen medal and was the guest of a beautiful local farmhouse, the Antico Feudo.

Due to the overwhelming communist regime he fled Poland when I was 28 years old. First he was in Egypt, for a not very long period. Then, for many years, in Italy, where he worked as a manager in the world of football and entertainment. On the eve of New Year's Eve 2000 he decided to start cycling the globe. It carries practically nothing with it. The philosophy behind what it does is more important. Sometimes he asks for hospitality because, at the end of the trip, he will donate all his savings to Russian orphaned children. There are over 50 thousand: he hopes to be able to donate five euros to each child ».


He chose the bike because it is synonymous with freedom. "You can go everywhere on a two-wheeler: it is often difficult, but after every ascent there is a descent".
