Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco

 Direttamente dal 1992 un'idea geniale di Zagato, casa dl design che trasformò una Fiat 500 in un biposto con portabiciclette integrato.
L’idea di fondo era molto semplice: prendere un’auto già di dimensioni contenute, tagliarla idealmente a metà, costruire un vano ove poter trovare spazio utile per consentire “l’ultimo miglio“. Oggi probabilmente sarebbe ancora più ‘aerodinamico’ piazzarci un monopattino elettrico; allora era la soluzione ideale.

L’auto presentava una soluzione interessante per il passeggero posteriore. Secondo il progetto, lo spazio per le gambe si sarebbe ‘allungato’ fino ad affiancare il sedile del conducente, sfruttando la cellula dell’abitacolo allargata. A fianco del finestrino di destra la visuale sarebbe stata appunto ‘contraddistinta’ dalla bicicletta, fissata all’auto grazie a delle fessure ad hoc scavate nella carrozzeria. Zagato mise mano anche ad alcuni particolari del design della Fiat Cinquecento, in particolare al posteriore con una coda non più dritta ma dolcemente spiovente, quasi a uovo. Fu trovato il modo di infilare nel progetto anche uno spoiler, sicuramente dettaglio curioso ma di dubbia utilità se non per motivi estetici.

Sarebbe stato difficile vederla allora sulle strade per alcuni dettagli di sicurezza non da poco, come la mancanza di specchietti sul lato destro e l’ingombro della bicicletta nella visuale; venisse riproposta oggi sarebbe possibile ovviare al problema grazie alla presenza di retrocamere ad hoc. Rimarrebbe qualche dubbio sulla distribuzione dei pesi e sul comportamento in curva. Certo non sarebbe risultata un’auto dalle alte velocità di percorrenza. I lati positivi sarebbero stati senza dubbio la facilità di parcheggio, specchietto permettendo appunto, e l’unicità.

The basic idea was very simple: take a car that was already small in size, ideally cut it in half, build a compartment where you could find useful space to allow for the "last mile". Today it would probably be even more 'aerodynamic' to place an electric scooter on it; then it was the ideal solution.

The car presented an interesting solution for the rear passenger. According to the project, the legroom would have 'stretched' to flank the driver's seat, taking advantage of the enlarged passenger cell. Next to the right window the view would have been 'marked' by the bicycle, fixed to the car thanks to ad hoc slots dug into the bodywork. Zagato also worked on some details of the design of the Fiat Cinquecento, in particular the rear with a tail that is no longer straight but gently sloping, almost egg-shaped. A way was also found to include a spoiler in the project, certainly a curious detail but of dubious usefulness if not for aesthetic reasons.

It would have been difficult to see it on the roads at the time due to some significant safety details, such as the lack of mirrors on the right side and the clutter of the bicycle in the view; were proposed again today it would be possible to overcome the problem thanks to the presence of ad hoc rear cameras. There would remain some doubts about weight distribution and cornering behavior. It certainly wouldn't have turned out to be a car with high travel speeds. The positive sides would undoubtedly have been the ease of parking, mirror permitting, and the uniqueness.
