Hugbike

It's the story of a special bike.
It is called Hugbike, also called "bike of the hugs" and is a tandem. The peculiarity of this means is that the guide is the person who sits behind. Everything comes from a "dream" of a father who wants to ride with his autistic son.
Giampietro is a boy with autism, Mario was used to taking him with him when he went out on a bike. But he could not do it any more: "On the saddle behind or in front of me that I was driving, it had become impossible, because of the weight, and a traditional tandem did not give the necessary security or know if he was pedaling or just talking together. And then he would only see my back, losing the beauty of the path ".
Here then comes the idea: a bicycle that was inspired by the tandem, but conceived in the opposite direction. You drive from the rear seat, thanks to a long handlebar. This causes the passenger sitting in front to be "hugged" by the tandem driver.
A small change for a large, noble project. It was 2012 and the Hugbike was born.
A beautiful and innovative project, developed by the social cooperative "Opera della Marca" and realized with the contribution of young people with autism from the province of Treviso to Godega si Sant'Urbano at the village Cohousing 4Austism. Mario built the first bicycles in a garage in the town with Domenico Gavio, who was also the father of an autistic boy.
An initiative born from below, from real needs, which becomes beautiful and important for everyone, not just for those with family members or friends with disabilities. It happens in many innovations that are created for disability and then turns out to be very valid and have an indistinct social impact, just think of families with children.
Now it can also be freely accessible in every region, through the 'Allianz Human Mind Foundation': "We want to offer the possibility of this big supportive hug and ride together to many Italian families through the donation of 20 Hugbikes, one for each region. 'Italy. Third sector institutions will be preferred, which will give the possibility to a greater number of people with possible disabilities (at least 50 people a year) to experience the thrill of cycling in total safety ".
