Le ruote non hanno mozzi nè raggi, non si vede traccia di forcella nè davanti nè dietro.

Per poterla acquistare bisognerà attendere che si concluda la campagna di raccolta fondi sulla piattaforma Indiegogo (già raccolti 500 mila dollari, nove volte il target) e che la Beno Technologies, la società di Seattle che l’ha ideata, inizi a produrla. Al proposito Beno è avara di dettagli.

Chi la prenota sulla piattaforma di crowfunding avrà uno sconto del 40% e quindi la pagherà 1.999 dollari, che è un a prezzo quasi ridicolo a fronte della complessità del progetto e della sovrabbondanza di gadget technologici che promette. Anche per questo, alcuni organi di stampa specializzati ipotizzano che si tratti di una delle tante bufale circolate sul web in questi anni.

Anche sui dattagli tecnici si sa pochino. Reevo Hubless monta un  motore elettrico da 750 watt di potenza, una batteria da 500 wattora, l’autonomia è indicata in circa 60 km. Le ruote sono fissate al telaio tramite un doppio cerchione: uno è fisso, l’altro ruota su cuscinetti e regge il pneumatico. Il motore è integrato al mozzo dei pedali, ma non è chiaro come trasmetta la trazione alla ruota.

Il resto, lo ripetiamo, è semplicemente impressionante. Le ruote senza raggi offrono uno spettacolare effetto scenico (ci metti un pò a capire come possano essere solidali al telaio e nel contempo girare). Per realizzarle, comunque, i costruttori di Seattle hanno dovuto risolvere un bel pò di problemi. Come garantire la rigidezza e la tenuta senza raggi? Come frenare? Come assorbire le sollecitazioni del terreno? Come sterzare?  Dicono di esserci riusciti, ma vorremmo montare in sella a questa Reevo Hubless per esserne sicuri. E verificare di persona come si può smontare la ruota, come sostituire un prenumatico, persino come gonfiarlo. Il team di Beno che l’ha progettata (ma sviluppo e prototipazione sono stati delocalizzati a Penang, in Malesia) assicura che tutto è stato preso in considerazione, risolto al meglio e testato.

L’hi tech degitale si spreca: c’è antifurto con blocco ruota integrato, fuori dalla portata dei tronchesi, nascosto nel telaio. Si sblocca con un sensore di impronte digitali. Ci sono poi sensori antifurto e tracciamento GPS per ulteriore protezione.  C’è un cavalletto retrattile nascosto. Una base per telefono trasforma lo  smartphone nel cruscotto. Le luci a Led sono integrate nei cerchioni fissi, blu all’antreriore e rosse al posteriore. Si accendono automaticamente quando la luce ambientale si abbassa.

The motor is integrated into the pedal hub, but it is unclear how it transmits traction to the wheel.

The rest, we repeat, is simply impressive. The spokeless wheels offer a spectacular scenic effect (it takes a while to understand how they can be integral with the frame and turn at the same time). To make them, however, the Seattle builders had to solve a lot of problems. How to ensure rigidity and tightness without spokes? How to brake? How to absorb the stresses of the ground? How to steer? They say they have succeeded, but we would like to ride this Reevo Hubless to be sure. And check for yourself how the wheel can be removed, how to replace a prenumatic, even how to inflate it. Beno's team that designed it (but development and prototyping have been relocated to Penang, Malaysia) ensures that everything has been taken into consideration, solved in the best possible way and tested.

Degital hi-tech is wasted: there is an anti-theft device with integrated wheel lock, out of reach of the cutters, hidden in the frame. It unlocks with a fingerprint sensor. Then there are anti-theft sensors and GPS tracking for further protection. There is a hidden retractable easel. A phone base transforms the smartphone into the dashboard. The LED lights are integrated into the fixed rims, blue at the front and red at the rear. They turn on automatically when the ambient light goes down.
