Bupa Challenge Tour

The Bupa Challenge Tour is the official recreation ride of the Santos Tour Down Under. The event allows participants to ride a stage of the Santos Tour Down Under just hours before the professionals hit the road.

It will be held on the morning of Bupa Stage 4 of the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under, on Friday 19 January 2018.

There is no minimum age for riders, however no child under the age of 16 should be riding without the supervision of an adult. There is no maximum age for riders participating in the ride, however please make sure that you are riding to your fitness and have plenty of water.

Every cyclist should bring additional food and sports nutrition, sunscreen, spare warm clothing, rain jacket, sunglasses, a puncture repair kit, spare inner tubes, pump, rear tail light, fully charged and working mobile phone, and water bottles/carriers and some money.

Riders are free to choose whichever style of bike they are most comfortable with. Suggestions for bike choices may include road bikes, mountain bikes, city bikes, hybrid bikes and cross bikes.
To ensure rider safety and satisfaction participants must ensure bikes are well maintained throughout the Bupa Challenge Tour.

A participant’s start position will be determined by the “Speed Group” selected during the registration process. Speed groups will then be arranged in the starting area from fastest to slowest.
The Speed Groups are:
  • Under 10 km per hour
  • 15 km per hour
  • 20 km per hour
  • 25 km per hour
  • 30 km per hour
  • Over 40 km per hour

South Australia Police will be escorting all riders from the start for a short distance. However this escort does NOT represent a road closure and riders MUST obey all normal road rules, including stopping at any red traffic signals, railway crossings, stop signs, riding two abreast and obeying the instructions of SAPOL or any Bupa Challenge Tour official or marshal.

All riders will be given an ID tag, which should be attached to their bike. This will record rider times crossing the start line, checkpoints and the finish line to give an accurate active riding time. If riders do not cross the start or finish line they will not receive a time.

After riders have completed their personal challenge they can enjoy food, water, SIS nutrition and hydration products, shaded areas and massages. The Santos Tour Down Under presentations will take place after the race, depending on when the professional cyclists arrive.
